I think British for me. At least for the last ten years.

Or American music. Early REM etc.

We gave the world New Order, they produced Guns and Roses.

Neither really, I'm not one to make distinctions based on nationalities. The bottom line is, as long as it's good, I don't give a hoot where they're from.

I'm ambivalent. The UK gave us New Order, the Cure, Pet Shop Boys, Depeche Mode, the Smiths, and the Beatles. But the UK also gave us the Spice Girls, the Rolling Stones, and Duran Duran. The US created Smashing Pumpkins, Metallica, Nirvana, and RHCP. But, the US also has a really shite top 40 radio - Eminem, Britney Spears, Fat Joe and the Terror Squad, Simple plan, Good Charlotte - but I've never had to listen to British top 40 radio, although it can't possibly be any worse than American.

Actually, I have to take the ambivilant vote as well. There's too much good stuff from both America and Britain, especially in the Sixties. That was when it was a real back-and-forth between American blues men and English rockers, then back to America and the British Invasion. So really it's been a good relationship for the most part (barring the UK sending us Spice Girls and us sending...well, fill in the blank, really).

If I had to pick, I'd probably lean towards the UK, but with the understanding that I could still keep my Dylan, Otis Redding, Band, REM, Jonathan Richman, etc...

I'd side with the Brits on this one, but not entirely of course. The majority of personal faves come from the UK though.

American music is, on the whole, terrible compared to the UK's output of superb bands.

I am not really sure. I think we probably don't hear as much of the crappy British music that is likely played on your own airwaves, but from what I am hearing lately, British music seems to have the edge a little bit right now. But then again, for every New Order or Doves, there is a Robbie Williams or Spice Girls (well they aren't releasing records really, but you know what I mean), as there is crap bands/performers like Blink 182 or Britney Spears for every great band like The Smashing Pumpkins or Garbage.

Right now I am listening to Doves (another Manchester band)-"Some Cities", so that sides with the British music argument, but I was listening to The Smashing Pumpkins-"Untitled" single before that :P.

By the way, I listen to Virgin Radio UK at work and for the love of God will they please stop playing the new Oasis track, Lyla, and the new Coldplay track so much and instead play more NEW ORDER!

I would have to say i like british music better but i voted for american music.

Britain gave us depeche mode. A cruel gift.

Well it has to be British Music. But i'll take a rational look at this:

Good American Bands: REM, RHCP, Killers, White Stripes, Flaming Lips, Pixies, Foo Fighters. Its also given us stuff like James Brown, Moby etc etc.

Good British Bands: Beatles, Oasis, Smiths, New Order, Muse, Manics, Franz, Libertines, Futureheads, Pink Floyd, Pistols, Clash and so on and so forth.

Looks as though the best American bands have taken a lot of British influences.

American music has also been at the forefront os some of the worst music imaginable. 99% of 'Hip Hop' 'nu-metal' hair metal, and from a personal view point, grunge.

oasis- another negative for english music.

Of course it's British music. England gave NO to the world and if it wasn't for them, I wouldn't have an idea which band would be my favourite. Seriously.

all my favorite bands are british or at least european. it goes in circles though. all these newer american bands seem better than current day british bands cause they borrowed or were influenced by british bands of the 80's and 90's who were influenced by so and so who may have been american.

We British may, to some degree, be the best in the world at writing and recording music. But does this mean we are the best at buying and listening to it?

More to the point, although you'd be forgiven for thinking that all US music for the past 15 years or so has been pure commercial on-demand output, you can't be forgiven for not investigating the work of Domino Effect (or specifically, his songwriting name Intervox.) He, in my opinion, is the world's best songwriter-producer of his generation. And that eclipses Keane and Air. (He's probably getting a little worried that I've said this so many times these past few months!)

Such a biased question to post in a forum devoted to a British band...

I can say that British-inspired American music (The Killers) is FAR BETTER than American-inspired British music (The Streets, Eamon).

Checked my CD and vinyl collection and the results are like that more or less: 65% Brit (nearly half of that comes from manchester), 20% American, 15% european (counting Irish in that category, i think they d prefer that, if not, i d like them to tell me to do the correction ;) ).

Its clearly the Brits who win, but either way im not gonna vote in this poll, since nationality is one thing that certainly means nothing when im deciding if i like something or not.
