Our phone just rang. A english speaking female voice (machine) said:

"Congratulation. You just won xxxx money. Please press nine to continue. Press nine now......"

What the fuck was that?

Never heard of those phonecalls before. Just like those e-mails from Africa. "Send me xxxx money and I'll put $20 million on your acount".

I didn't.

But is this a common thing? I've never heard about it before here in Sweden. And a machine speaking english is a bit odd too.

if you pressed 9, a fee would probably be charged to your bill. A well-know scam in the states, usually taking advantage of the elderly.

Here these damn phone calls are a plague, too. A few hours ago I had this: "Good morning here is Mrs. XY from company YZ" I said "Good-bye" and hung up immediately... I get these "bullshit calls" almost every day. I decided to let my answering machine do the work in future. If it's important someone will leave a message and I will call back... And if a company wants to offer me some shit, they should write me a letter (you can burn that better than the phone :evil4: )...

A way that I can tell the other person on the line is a telemarketer is if they mispronounce our last name. If they say "Mr. Siegler" or "Mr. Zeigler" or even "Mr. Stigler", then I just hang up :nonono:

Another strange thing is the typical "wrong number" call we get once a month from the same person. They're always looking for someone named "Laura", and they never seem to figure out that no one lives here by that name, and they might occasionaly say "okay, wrong number", but a month later they make the same mistake. I'm tempted at one point (because of the old song) to say to them "no she doesn't live here, but tell Laura I love her." :p

Strange folks out there...

I get a half dozen calls like these a day:angry: Its hard to remain polite..they should be outlawed:banghead:

Intelligently, this country has enacted new laws against telemarketers. You can join a do-not call registry. This registry forbids company from calling people that have not done prior business with them. Companies who violate this law are subjected to a hefty fine. However, i dont know if this is ever enforced.

It's always fun if they call my grandmother's number and they want to talk to my grandfather. My Gran'dad died about 16 years ago and we didn't change the entry in the phonebook to my granny's name...

its funny when i was in high school, US army recruiters used to call me unrelentlessly. The one time i lied and said i was gay, and the phone calls stopped.

Some comedian (could have been in "Seinfeld"?) recently told a recipe against those calls:

Kind of: Caller: "Hello I'm Mr. XY from company YZ." You: "Oh Hello Mr. XY. Listen I have no time. I have to go. Please give me your private telephone number and I'll call you back this evening. Oh you're not allowed to give your number and you don't want to be called after work? So why do you do this to me?"

Yes, that was from an episode of Seinfeld, and I do believe that got a huge round of applause from the studio audience at the time  (I know I did when I watched that one for the first time.

Count me as one of those growing numbers of people who don't have a land-line phone but only uses a cell phone; I know those regular phones could be useful in certain situations, but I wouldn't use it if I was home most of the time, so the extra expense of that isn't high on my list of things to get.

EXCEPT, and I didn't want to correct Bere before, but now I MUST...

Seinfeld's punchline is "Now you know how I feel."

Bloody Germans! :evil4:

I might have to try that seinfeld thing. I get those calls at school very early in the morning, say 4 am once! they call me at the wierdest freaking hours. And I have to deal with those wrong calls things too. Its all quite strange, I don't even know how these people get my dorm room phone number. Its a scary thing!

Here in Sweden, the bastards have started to call my cellphone, because I never answer my phone at work (i'm hardly ever there).

Last Sunday at 4:30PM I had one of those calls on my cellphone. On a fucking Sunday!

No Caller ID, no answer on the landline. And my mobile has an answerphone message not unlike...."I'm either away, asleep or sitting here wondering what kind of anonymous coward barrs their caller ID, if you're NOT a telemarketer or other subhuman, speak to my machine and I'll get back to you in a minute"

BTW sod seinfeld....I had this guy on the phone from BT one day trying to flog me a mobile. I asked him a million questions about it, many of which he had to go ask the supervisor about....kept him on the line for well over 30 mins, then said, "ok you win, I'll take one" dude (as I expected) says "if I could just take your credit card details"..."sorry mate don;t use em, no one here has one, evil things, against my religion dontcha know"

Waste my time will u u ballix?

I've had a few of those, usually claiming I've won a holiday in Disneyland or some such crap. I'm ex-directory, but apparently they just dial possible numbers in numerical order till they get a real phone number.

I don't understand whether pressing 9 does anything bad or not. Some sources say it does, some that it doesn't. Some say that it only does on certain sorts of company internal telephone switchboards.

It's very tiresome. Just as bad is when there's nobody there when you pick up because the recorded voice machine is busy. Logically these companies are surely guilty of harassment or stalking if they keep making such silent calls?

Reminds me of the time a couple of Jehovah's Witnesses ended up complaining to me that _I_ had wasted too much of _their_ time after I spent an hour trying to convert them to atheism on my doorstep (I was very bored). I was tempted to ask for their home address so I could come round and continue the discussion on their doorstep.

oddly enough i dont get many of these types of phone call, but i love it when i do. ill spend hours on the phone with em i fookin love it,i tell em my life story, the conversation usually starts on what they are trying to flog at which point i become confused and ask them to describe what they mean. then its the "oooh id love one of them/it whatever" my freind had one of them/it whatever years ago and he swears by it,then its time to get all confused again and so on. once had a double glazing salesman in for 6 hours cos i couldnt make my mind up,in the end he asked if he could leave as his missus would be wondering where he was at 2am. i phoned his firm the next day and complained that he was to lazy to wait for me to make my mind up as to which windows i wanted. when they offered to send another rep i told them to fuck off as if there salesmen are lazy bastards then what are there fitters like? then of course you get the door knockers, usually jehovas witnesses or mormons, there is a bit of a turf war on around here since the mormons built there centre of the universe chapel nr chorley and they tend to double up on sundays. so if its jovies ill pretend im a mormon and visa versa. and they say that there is never anything to do on a sunday eh,by the time ive finished with em they dont know if they are budhists even.:evil4: . but the best crac to lay on any phonespammer is to fain a heart attack on the phone complete with the phone drop onto floor(always a giggle). or for cold callers (one for the jovies in particular as they always tend to drag a lass around with em) is to answer the door bollock naked or in various staes of undress ie: missus knickers only and keep glancing behind you and turning so they get a glimpse of your arse. belive me all of these have been done over the years and im thinking of launching a discrimination suit against both religions as they dont knock anymore:scream:

Keep the good work up!

I use to say to the Jehovas that I believe in Satan. They usually run away then :evil4:

I was bored a couple of years ago. Home alone with my 3 years old daughter. The doorbeel rang, and 2 guys was selling books. I told them that I wasn't going to buy anything, but they could come in and talk for a while. They did. We had a nice talk, and after a bit of coffee, they left after 2 hours. I bought no books, of course. :evil4:

(But I don't think they thought I would either. They just wanted to sit down for a while)
