They're not being lumped with Depeche Mode, although I personally love both bands. These people are just saying how mediocre Depeche Mode's new single's cover is. (Well, the song is a good song though.)

The song is good but alas the sleeve is lousy, especially in comparison to their others. Yesterday, I was killing time before work and went into this goth/industrial/synthpop record store and looked at the DM section. They had a good selection of singles and I noticed how in some cases the covers were better than the songs - particularly those off Ultra and Exciter. But, with a song like A Question of Time, both the song and the sleeve are good.

I only know the song "Precious", but that song is definitely better than anything I've ever heard on the album "Exciter". That's just my opinion, though.

That is the single cover, the album cover is actually kind of neat. I would though, actually place the "NO" cover equal to it. I like them both to be honest. I'm not going to post it or link it but anybody can see it on the front page of DM's site.

I like album covers that don't look like all the rest so, maybe that's part of how I judge them.

I think they are lumped together because they both made danceable music during the same eras. To a person who is not a major New Order or DM fan, they will remember Blue Monday and Blasphemous Rumous being played on the same stations and the same bars/clubs pretty much. They are also both associated with electronic music, even though they don't rely on it totally (both groups have made songs, even near whole albums with guitars and drums). They are both old but still going strong (New Order had a hiatus but overall they are still relevant).

It's the same reasons people will lump classic rock together. Does The Guess Who sound ANYTHING like the Rolling Stones? No, not really.

If New Order had to be associated with any group I am glad it is Depeche Mode, a group who sells out stadium sized venues and still makes top 5 records rather than Velvet Underground who I might 'lump' in classic rock stations with The Guess Who and the Stones.
