Who's brave enought to admit it?

I love them. Favourite album: The Joshua Tree.

Brave man ahoy!

Head above parapet (smelt wrong):

I'm a casual fan. Usually buy the albums, but that's all.

Half of their stuff is great, the other half I find hard work, but overall they are pretty decent.

Would you not go and see them live?

Love U2 but have only seen them once which was the Popmart Tour in Botanic Gardens, Belfast. Favourite albums would be Unforgetable Fire & Achtung Baby.

Not too fussed, but if someone was giving away tickets i'd definately go...

There are faint rumours that they're coming back to Belfast. But where could they play?

I hate myself for liking a lot of their songs, and owning a couple of albums, and one of the best-ofs, and seeing their live performances on TV. But every time Bono starts on one of his causes, however well-meaning he may be, I just get pissed and turn it back to porn :p

I wouldn't ever go see them live...unless the girl I was trying to have sex with wanted to see them and was a big fan. Then I'm so totally there (but hating myself every minute for it) :evil4:

I actually like most of their material, and anyone on this site who doesn't is just afraid that their wife would rather fuck Bono than themselves.

The first 2 albums were ace. Joshua tree have some good songs.

But, nah. Not a fan at all. Really.

Upstairs in Auntie Annies or the Limelight :thumb: It would probably have to be a couple of dates in the Odyssey, though i'm not that fussed on it as a concert venue.

I think they'd have to do 7 nights at the Odyssey to satisfy demand. I think they'd draw the line at that. They're not Westlife.

It all went wrong after JT - They believed far too much of the shite that was being written about them. Much in the same way Depish went.

Love most of the stuff uptae about 88 - don't get me wrong they've had a few good songs since then, just not enough to make me want to listen / buy one of their albums.

As fer seeing the basta's live. I seem to remember back about 91, it was £30/35 to see the Mondays / Electronic / Roses etc... U2 were charging 150% more than that. They love their fans, aye right, the rich one's!

Anyways best album is the live album, Under a Blood Red Sky. This song is not a rebel song. Maybe not, but it still annoys all the huns in the pub when we put it on the juke box :D

It was only £27 for my U2 ticket that was in 1997. They haven't played Belfast since.

£60 for a ticket this summer. and that was standing, seating was more expensive, up to and over £100.

i agree with the shugster, pretty average after 88. I think their last 3 albums have mostly been boring and overplayed shite (beautiful day and vertigo, does anyone know of any songs more marketed than these two?)

Live, well the fancy light show is all well and good, effectively disguing that bono's voice is really going. And throughout most of the gigs, there is one of the richest people around, slagging everyone off for not doing enough to help the worlds poor. Boo bloody hoo.

And they wont be playing belfast. From what i understand, after the North American leg of the tour, thats its until the next one. Why waste time playing Europe when you can spend all your time sucking up to the americans? Of course, why any band would want to play Belfast, i dont know.

and Chris, i thought you were a 'goth' What you doing listening to u2?

My thoughts exactly Shug. I never did buy JT. I stopped at The Unforgiveable Fart. A good chill out lp. I saw Rattle and Hum and may have purchased that cd used. But after that all shit rolling downhill. But that live lp is awesome. Too bad Eno fucked them up.

As for ticket prices, what a bunch of twats. Spit!

Found this this summer at a friend's house. $5 when they were good and had no ego issues or Jerusalem Syndrome.

For all the comments about the North, they've very rarely played up here. Before Botanic, the last time was 10 years before that, at the Kings Hall, on The Joshua Tree tour. Someone waved a San Francisco flag (SF) and Bono got pissed off, because he thought it was a Sinn Fein flag.

Uncle Liam wrote: Live, well the fancy light show is all well and good, effectively disguing that bono's voice is really going.

Definetly. They've had to drop the keys of several songs to suit him.

Uncle Liam wrote: Of course, why any band would want to play Belfast, i dont know.

The audience appreciate anything that isn't Westlife and Phil Collins.

Uncle Liam wrote: Chris, i thought you were a 'goth' What you doing listening to u2?

They were the first band I got into. Bought Boy, and never looked back.

U2 are rubbish.

Quite like Passengers though.

But the thing is Chris, the audience in Belfast DONT appreciate it. And i should know, i saw a few quality bands while i lived over there, only the hype bands of the day (strokes, snow patrol) got any crowd reaction at all. If you can be bothered digging out my comments i've made on this previously somewhere in the thread archives.

But a couple of examples:

Snow Patrol: no reaction to any song apart from Run. Strokes: no reaction to any song except Last Nite Doves: Little reaction anything Ordinary Boys: No one there hardly! Inspiral Carpets: Ditto.

Anyway, i've seen u2 now. Probably the biggest band in the world right now, wont need to see them again. Although if they did a set consisting of stuff up to and including 1987, and no later, i might re consider.

Uncle Liam wrote:

I saw them at their last night in the Ulster Hall last year (is this where you saw them?). I was down the front, and they went nuts through most of the set.

Uncle Liam wrote: Strokes: no reaction to any song except Last Nite.

A friend saw them at the Ulster Hall (again, was this the one you were at?) and he said the crowd were good, but yes didn't pick up until Last Nite.

Don't blame them!

U2 rubbish? Have you ever listened to One? Or something as radical (as radical as a band that large can be) to Numb? Or So Cruel? Or Bad? Or Mercy? Or A man And A Woman?

U2 take you to a place that has to be believed to be seen.

I never got the curtis-bono comparison. Curtis i could never see being so extroverted off the stage, and so friendly with the press.. Bono plays to the cameras and curtis was 'real'. He wouldnt be around trying to save the earth and being in bed with all the men who made the mess. Also, Curtis songwriting abilites wipe Bono's to the floor.

I think it would be wise for us both to agree to disagree, agreed?!

no reason to agree to disagree, its just natural.

I never had somebody explain the curtis-bono comparison? Anybody care to?

If i may paraphrase the smiths, Bono speaks nothing of my life.

I was joking (to an extent) and you completely missed my Passengers reference. (Oh well I suppose it was a minor LP) Passengers are U2 + Eno. But anyhow onto your gripes..

sueroper wrote: My dear boy, in an alternative multiverse with our dear departed Ian still alive......he *would* be called Bono. Bono *IS* Ian Curtis, and many other things, like a wanker for example, but thats not important night now, your narrow mind is.

Ian Curtis would never have ended up being anyone as crass as Bono. They are entirely different personalities and Curtis was far more of an enigma than Bono could ever hope to be. Curtis was not an easy personality to fathom whereas Bono and his ambitions are as clear as day to anyone.

The reason so many fans gormlessly quote the infamous (and bogus) "Curtis would've been Bono" is derived for the piss poor NewOrderStory documentary and Tony Wilson/Hooky's claims Joy Division would've been as big as U2 (not that they would've been the same band). Also, people who dislike U2's music or Bono's wankerish traits are not narrow minded, they are as open minded as you but simply have a different take. People who classify other people narrow minded usually can't handle having their own perceptions being challenged.

sueroper wrote: U2 rubbish? Have you ever listened to One? Or something as radical (as radical as a band that large can be) to Numb? Or So Cruel? Or Bad? Or Mercy? Or A man And A Woman?

One is a good track, it's not half as good as U2's publicity machine or Q magazine journalists would have you believe, but it's probably one of their best records. The rest you mention bar A Man And A Woman are simply album tracks, I find it difficult to get excited over them. Finally, A Man And A Woman is a hurrendous piece of bilge from the latest LP, a bad choice to put forward in their defence. I would've chosen something like Do You Feel Loved or some tracks where U2 actually took some risks musically.

sueroper wrote: U2 take you to a place that has to be believed to be seen.

One of my mates went to see em during that fucking terrible (if not laughable) Zooropa thing, and he paid 75 quid for a ticket to see a freak show. The flag waving was bad enough but climbing from a 20ft Lemon? And they weren't on half the drugs the Order were

To be fair, they are a fucking great live band.

I just couldn't take myself to one of their shows, the atmosphere down the front of a neworder gig is all I need. A good frontman Bono is - but could you imagine Barney strutting up and down a catwalk in and out of the madness down the front of an Order gig? He'd get bottled for being a cunt.

Give me neworder anyday of the week.

I think that was Popmart 97-98. Zoo TV was 91-93

but i dont think they are that good live. Ok they have a nice light show, but you just as easy see that on tv or dvd. The only bands i'll compare them to are Oasis and Chili's, bands i have seen in the same venue. Oasis, evey night, had City of Manchester stadium, everyone standing and singing along every word as if lives depended on it. Same with the Chili's, who created an amazing atmosphere. U2 didnt, sure there was a few good singalongs, but people werent standing, and where i was standing, it was actually quite muted.

Cheers for clearing that up - He definitely paid 75 notes for Zooropa, I am sure he still has his ticket from Wembley.

So the plot was still lost as late as 98? Foowk me.

The Best Of is fookin ace, but as I say, after The Joshua Tree I'd had enough of them. Fair play to the fans that stood by them, that's what being a proper fan is all about.

Liam, that's one of my big regrets, I followed Oasis from when they started, I can remember hearing their first appearance on Radio 1's evening session with Lamacq and being blown away - I still have that recording to this day - cos I taped it while I was working backshift in a right wee shithole back in early 94.

But I still havnae seen em live! One of these days mate!

Coincidentally my 19 and 17 year old brothers got into Oasis cos of me and have seen them a few times. Putting me to shame so they are

I like U2. And I like Bono. And I like what Bono's doing. He's in bed with the men doing the world in? As the Edge (OK, time to get a real name) said, he (The Edge) would lunch with the devil if it would do some good.

I like the first two albums more than War (it's a bit dated). Can't stand anything after War UNTIL we get to Achtung Baby. I like everything from Achtung Baby forward. But the last album was weak, except for Vertigo, which I did like.

Twist-- nice poster. My cousin saw them on Market Street in San Francisco around that time for $3. I have no use for any band-- U2 or whoever-- that charges the obscene prices for tickets that bands are charging today.

I saw the Chilis twice. Once at Slaine Castle and at Phoenix Park. Both times, the crowd only reacted to the big numbers, which happened to make up a good chunk of the set.

Saw U2 at Croke Park, and the crowd went mental for every number(although it was a home crowd, to be fair). A friend saw them a month (or so) later at the San Siro in Milan, and he said the crowd were ten times better than at Croke, which says it all.

I second that, the new one's fucking bollocks. I saw the video on The Amp and it's just the most uninspired promo I've seen in a while (this coming from a New Order fan too). The band on a trailer being driven through New York and passers by looking bewildered, the bit where Bono and Edge grin at each other is cringeworthy. It's contrived.

I won't make this post all venom and bile towards U2, I'll chuck in something positive  My favourite period for the band was Achtung Baby/Zooropa/Passengers OST/Pop, for the simple reason that they tried something different sounding and weren't the plodding, chest thumping U2 we see today. You wouldn't hear the 2005 U2 risk tracks like Miss Sarajevo, Mofo or Lemon as they're petrified of offending their fanbase.

The 90s produced the most interesting and most flawed U2 tracks, pre-90s is fine too but the last two records they've done have been U2-on-autopilot. Their peak was reached a long time ago.

Yeah thank god they haven't ended up with:

1) A comeback most artists would sell their souls for.2) Four top ten singles in a row.3) A slew of recognition-of-talent awards.4) A song of Irish Blood, English Heart's calibre.5) A song of First Of The Gang To Die's calibre.

Most singers-- Bono included-- lose their voices as they age. Morrissey, on the other hand, has gotten better, if anything. Simply amazing.

I cant stand by and let this go:

Firstly, the charts mean FUCK ALL. If these were a barometer of quality of song then Crazy Frog wouldnt have been number 1. All u2 singles are given blanket coverage on all the music channels and on the majority of commercial radio stations and radio 1. Morrissey, New Order et al get at most a tenth of the coverage that u2 get. Also, U2 seel their songs to adverts, meaning they get more exposure across TV. This is exaclty what Moby did to shift millions of copies of Play and make him extremley rich and famous. Due to the general publics overall stupidity, and Bono's hypocritical stance and amazing sales skills, as well as the media hype that surrounds them, it is therefore unsurprising that u2 got to number 1.

Secondly: u2 didnt "come back" from pop. So they didnt release an album for three years. Neither did Oasis between 2002-2005. No one suggested they "came back". Morrissey didnt have a record deal for five years! The media were against him, and no one wanted to know. To come "come back" with a number 3 single, with little air play i'd say is quite an achievement. Were u2 ever in that position? of course not. They did an experimental album which was mostly shit and because they couldnt take the criticism went back to what they had been doing for the previous 18 years.

Best live act: Right, i have seen, apart from Green Day, all of the acts nominated in the last year. I have seen Coldplay 3 times in 2005, Oasis 4 times in 05, Muse 3 times in 2004 and u2 in june this year. I can honestly say that the best out of these is Muse by far. the energy that comes across in the songs, the passion, the ability of the band. And look at the bands who werent nominated, REM, Foo Fighters, Chemical brothers, Chili's, etc etc, and thats just big bands!

your comment about Morrissey not moving on from Viva Hate beggars belief. This suggests to me that you havent actually listened to any of morriseys subsequent albums. And until you do so, you are not in any position to comment.

And i also question whether you have seen him live. And since he hasnt played Belfast since 1999, i would consider this unlikely, considering you dont actually like him.

Can't we all just agree that U2 are the Journey of their day :evil4:

U2 have done some great, great songs in the past. But I think they started to peter out around the time of "All That You Can't Leave Behind" (which is a decent album that got way too much attention after 9/11 when the title song became an anthem or something). The first thought I had when I heard "Vertigo" was "wow, that really really sucks ass".

"One", "New Year's Day", "All I Want Is You", "Sunday Bloody Sunday", etc, those are great songs. Vertigo is not.

My brother has informed me that he's got me a ticket for their PDX gig in December, it'll be good to go out for drinks with him at least.

Haven't heard anything that I really liked from the last couple of records, apart from Walk On. Couldn't stand Vertigo, one of the most irritating songs of this year, or any, for sure, so no doubt I'll be crowd watching during that one.

Still, the audience reaction when they play something like Where The Streets Have No Name live sends a chill down my spine, so I imagine I'm gonna like about half of the upcoming show, and be bored by the rest.

I really love U2 : got all their albums and some 7", 12" and CD singles. I think they are ace, period.

There were some beautiful songs on the album before 'Atomic Bomb' (can't remember what it was called, but i've got it).

i was really into U2 in the mid-late '80s and the first concert i ever attended was the joshua tree show in denver where they filmed part of rattle and hum. i started losing interest around achtung baby and completely lost interest after zooropa.

yes, a lot of it has to do with bono's sycophantic and holier-than-thou attitude which really put me off (patti smith should be given a medal for putting him in his place at the NME awards a few years back), but i also lost interest in U2 because their music went in a direction i just wasn't interested in anymore.

Only thing i'll say positive about U2,is the fact they've kept Bono under wraps so he hasn't done a solo album and i only have to hear his drone every coupe of yrs for a few months when they release singles.
