Ahem. Vertigo is quite enjoyable. But it's only one song. You are the Quarry is an album full of great songs. Every one a gem.

The floor was wiped alright, but it was Morrissey did the wiping.

Most singers-- Bono included-- lose their voices as they age. Morrissey, on the other hand, has gotten better, if anything. Simply amazing.

I don't think he's moved on from Viva Hate. And while You Are The Quarry had Irish Blood.. and First.., it also had America is Not The World,Come Back to Camden,The World is Full of Crashing Bores,How Can Anyone Possibly Know How I Feel and You Know I Couldn't Last.

I cant stand by and let this go:

Firstly, the charts mean FUCK ALL. If these were a barometer of quality of song then Crazy Frog wouldnt have been number 1. All u2 singles are given blanket coverage on all the music channels and on the majority of commercial radio stations and radio 1. Morrissey, New Order et al get at most a tenth of the coverage that u2 get. Also, U2 seel their songs to adverts, meaning they get more exposure across TV. This is exaclty what Moby did to shift millions of copies of Play and make him extremley rich and famous. Due to the general publics overall stupidity, and Bono's hypocritical stance and amazing sales skills, as well as the media hype that surrounds them, it is therefore unsurprising that u2 got to number 1.

Secondly: u2 didnt "come back" from pop. So they didnt release an album for three years. Neither did Oasis between 2002-2005. No one suggested they "came back". Morrissey didnt have a record deal for five years! The media were against him, and no one wanted to know. To come "come back" with a number 3 single, with little air play i'd say is quite an achievement. Were u2 ever in that position? of course not. They did an experimental album which was mostly shit and because they couldnt take the criticism went back to what they had been doing for the previous 18 years.

Best live act: Right, i have seen, apart from Green Day, all of the acts nominated in the last year. I have seen Coldplay 3 times in 2005, Oasis 4 times in 05, Muse 3 times in 2004 and u2 in june this year. I can honestly say that the best out of these is Muse by far. the energy that comes across in the songs, the passion, the ability of the band. And look at the bands who werent nominated, REM, Foo Fighters, Chemical brothers, Chili's, etc etc, and thats just big bands!

your comment about Morrissey not moving on from Viva Hate beggars belief. This suggests to me that you havent actually listened to any of morriseys subsequent albums. And until you do so, you are not in any position to comment.

And i also question whether you have seen him live. And since he hasnt played Belfast since 1999, i would consider this unlikely, considering you dont actually like him.

Can't we all just agree that U2 are the Journey of their day

U2 have done some great, great songs in the past. But I think they started to peter out around the time of "All That You Can't Leave Behind" (which is a decent album that got way too much attention after 9/11 when the title song became an anthem or something). The first thought I had when I heard "Vertigo" was "wow, that really really sucks ass".

"One", "New Year's Day", "All I Want Is You", "Sunday Bloody Sunday", etc, those are great songs. Vertigo is not.

My brother has informed me that he's got me a ticket for their PDX gig in December, it'll be good to go out for drinks with him at least.

Haven't heard anything that I really liked from the last couple of records, apart from Walk On. Couldn't stand Vertigo, one of the most irritating songs of this year, or any, for sure, so no doubt I'll be crowd watching during that one.

Still, the audience reaction when they play something like Where The Streets Have No Name live sends a chill down my spine, so I imagine I'm gonna like about half of the upcoming show, and be bored by the rest.

Wow! U2 vs. Morrissey. Never thought I would see such a thread. My wife and I are looking forward to the U2 show at the Palace of Auburn Hills, Michigan at the end of Oct. Just for kicks, I think we will put on some Morrissey on the way there.

Are Morrissey and Bob Monkhouse one and the same ?

Electric Co. is a great song. Vertigo is not.

I really love U2 : got all their albums and some 7", 12" and CD singles. I think they are ace, period.

There were some beautiful songs on the album before 'Atomic Bomb' (can't remember what it was called, but i've got it).

i was really into U2 in the mid-late '80s and the first concert i ever attended was the joshua tree show in denver where they filmed part of rattle and hum. i started losing interest around achtung baby and completely lost interest after zooropa.

yes, a lot of it has to do with bono's sycophantic and holier-than-thou attitude which really put me off (patti smith should be given a medal for putting him in his place at the NME awards a few years back), but i also lost interest in U2 because their music went in a direction i just wasn't interested in anymore.

Only thing i'll say positive about U2,is the fact they've kept Bono under wraps so he hasn't done a solo album and i only have to hear his drone every coupe of yrs for a few months when they release singles.
