Bought Batman Returns S.E on DVD ysterday, started watching it last night, thought to myself i've seen the film before lets see what gems of wisdom the Burton can come out with about what a fine ass Michelle Pfieffer has in that cat suit etc.Or if he could beat Michael Mann for classy commentaryness
Anyway clicked special features nothing, languages nothing i was enraged/upset

That's the bad thing about DVDs, you get so used to having a commentary of some sort that when one comes along with no such feature, you start kicking ass and taking names 
One of my favorite commentaries has to be the one Gerald Scarfe and Roger Waters did for The Wall. They both were speechless at some of the classic scenes, and cracking up with laughter about it 
The first time I watched Empire Strikes Back with Irwin Kirshner's commentary (mixed in with Carrie Fisher, Ben Burtt, and Lucas), I found it annoying how he was just going on and on about what's on the screen. But now, I could see where it's a quick "beginner's course" in how to direct a film 
this is very true,i do enjoy a commentary as long as the peopel do them are interested in doing it - take Rob Reiner for instance on stand by me - God that was painful to listen to he just sounds so bored.
I don't like it when commentarys are sliced together like T2:ultimate edition, Seven, and one flew over the cuckoo's nest.
But i think Michael Mann is the king of the directors commentary the guy is just a fountain of info, why he did what he did, the look of the character, his motivation for doing a certain thing in the film ,the whole theory behind the story etc, a under-rated genius in my opinion

Yes yes yes, I hate the spliced-together commentary!
How much cost-efficent would it be just to get the people who want to talk about the film together so they can have an actual conversation? 
Oh, if you haven't listened to the commentary on "Anchorman", you must. It's hilarious (they even bring in Lou Rawls at one point, for a very bizarre conversation)
Okay...I know I'm going to get ragged for renting "Love Actually", but not only did I rent it...I watched it with the commentary by Bill Nighy, Hugh Grant, et al. Very funny stuff 
The one movie I'd have loved to have a commentary, but didn't? Why, it's the one I've been quoting with this little fella last night:

Hey, it was Christmas, I was lonely, I had been drinking a bit....you're right, there's no excuse. 
I was raised by females primarily, so I'm afraid the natural male intolerance for chick flicks seems not to be so ingrained in me. However, I can proudly say I've never sat through a complete Julia Roberts film all the way through. My bullshit detector works just fine, thank you :D
Anyway, I'm sure you've made a rental that you wouldn't necessarily want people the world over on an international forum to hear about...
On a side note: rented "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" a few nights back, watched it after the WS was done with, and liked it pretty well. Popped it in last night to watch with the commentary...froze up not once but twice. I pull the DVD out (after having to beat my player 
) and it's covered in scratches. Fucking shit

Hmmmm thats a very good question i'm just thinking about it, but off the top of my head because i'm just one macho mutha i don't think i have.
i once had to watch Bridget jones diary in a swap deal to get the UFC on TV in a shared house i was living in a few years ago and thats about as sad as i've gone. i did go to see Feverpitch, the original not remake at the cinema when i got confused about it being a football film and not some soppy romance.
The Ghostbusters commentary is good.
Any Guy Ritchie one is all :director: but no real interesting moments.

yeah the ghostbusters one is a good one. yeah i listened to the one on snatch and its just him and that vaughn fella swearing all the time, its one thing in his movies but when it spills over into that too, well thats just too much ritchie for this guy to take

He's good in the documentary.
Mel Brook's commentaries for Blazing Saddles and Spaceballs are quite entertaining.
Kevin Smith's commentaries for his films are good too.
Maybe barney would give us a commentary on a concert dvd

i like the commentary on clerks, especially the bit where Kevin Smith is very candid and honest about how much a curse Clerks has been on his career and people think all his subsequent films have been shit.

The one for Chasing Amy starts off with 'Fuck DVD' sine the commentry was recorded for laserdisc.

i just couldn't get into mallrats don't know why, and Chasing Amy where do i begin, i'll start with Ben affleck,the shitest actor in hollywood.and i just think that it gets too caught up in trying to be overly clever and to much witty talk instead of moving the story on and overall i just found it boring and slow

I thought Mallrats was 10 times better than Clerks. Only watched Clerks a few months ago, and was distinctly unimpressed. Mallrats is choc o block with laughs from start to finish.
Chasing Amy: I thought Mr.Affleck did well with the acting. When he made the proposition, I thought 'ahnoooooooooo' but it didn't work out for him, and it gave the film the sense at the end that he'd regret his actions for the rest of his life. It's a theme that fascinates me.
Having said that: we're all different.
the original star wars commentary with george lucas, carrie fisher and, erm, some other guy (art director?) is brilliant because carrie fisher is so witty--it's worth it for her alone.
Never have really thought about playing the commentary while watching a film, might be my subconscious reminding me that I don't care for people talking while watching a film or show, Mystery Science Theater 3000 excepted of course.
Probably should give 'em a go as far as gaining insight into my fave films or shows, seeing as how other posters in this thread have found value in them.
