WinFixer 2005 :banghead:

A few weeks ago, I started getting the message "warning: your computer BS BS BS crashes BS BS would you like to install WinFixer 2005? (Recommended)". Taking this for spam or some virus-laden crap, I clicked "no"...

Now, it seems that every time I'm online, most of it is spent clicking "no" or the big red "X" on the corner of the pop-up, and there doesn't seem to be anything I can do to get rid of it

Help me, Obi-Wan. You're my only hope

Anyone know what I can do to be rid of this? (I ran Norton Virus Scan yesterday, but it was going on forever and I gradually lost patience)

Actually, I turned on my Firewall and it seems (knock on wood) to be keeping the thing from occuring. Of course, it wasn't on apparently when I turned this puppy on. So I'll download the Microsoft thing later on tonight (too lazy to do it now )

I get trojans mails everyday.

But it's easy to see when a mail is real or not. Pay more attention, Trev. And put a $%&* firewall and antivirus in your PC.

BE AWARE! By clicking the X everytime I got messages, I lost absolutely everything - 5 years worth of invoices, correspondence, contacts, outlook everything! All my work stuff was installed on one computer alongside homestuff. Some was backed up on disc, but everything since I installed a new system went - it has been an absolute nightmare and I paid a fortune in the end to an expert who still couldn't retrieve anything. Constantly check for security updates and back everything up; install all the spyware available, and don't ignore any messages! However, the worst thing of all is all the music files I had! Well, it took almost an hour, but I now have the Microsoft AntiSpyware installed on my computer

Now watch my computer crash entirely :p

The WinFixer thing kept coming up after I installed the AntiSpyware, so I ran another scan. It showed up some spyware

But I was able to remove it and reboot

So no more downloading from the Playboy site for me

(fingers crossed that this nightmare is over, though knowing my luck it's only the beginning :p )

What anti-spyware were you using before MS?

I've had to run scans twice since installing it, and each time it detects stuff that needs to be gotten rid of (spyware, of course). Which leads me to believe...Microsoft is the culprit!

That, or I just need to run a quick scan every time I get online. One of the two :p

I use a tool called HiJackThis. What it does is exams what your pc is doing and lists what's going on. You can then eliminate what you do not want. Be careful as you may delete something you need.

I've had something similar to this on my computer for over a year now. It doesn't seem to actually doanything other than annoy the fook out of me by popping up all the time when I'm on the net. Course for all I know it's transmitting my info to some database in the far east!

I've tried all kinds of de-bugging and anti-spyware software, nothing gets rid of it. I've downloaded hijack this before but I'm afraid to delete anything! I think I'm going to have to take it in somewhere and have a pro fix it.

Do you have a dial-up connection?

If you use broadband then NEVER connect directly to the net.

Stick a router on the net then hide behind it. A hacker will find your router on the net but wont be able to do anything with it. I do, and never have a problem. I dont use a firewall or spyware either.

It's not 100% protection, but I like a little risk!

The other route to your machine is email, so dont open anything you dont

Don't have broadband, just a dial-up. I've got Windows XP though so all these little programs love me

Nothing wrong with 98 SE that a reboot could not take care of. The first thing you need to do with XP, aside from the security updates , is to remove all the unless resource hogging shit that comes with XP. Specifically Messenger.

Microsoft are at best 2 months behind hackers

The golden rule for secure computing is to put at least one other type of operating system/hardware between you and the net. Every nerd hacker on the net is begging for a Microsoft computer connected directly to the net..it's easy game.

And if you use MSN whilst directly connected to the net then why bother locking your door at night?

It costs less to buy a router than pukka firewall software.

I wonder why so many flocked to MS for security since their OS are bugged and hacked so often. MS is the leading target of hackers. People claim that Macs are virtually virus free but that is only because there are not enough people using them to make hacking them profitable.

Maybe if I finally installed the service pack 2 I might plug the holes up, or not. I don't think hackers need to try hard to get into XP.

Used to have a Mac and I really liked it, but I worry about compatibility.

Ideally I'd have a Mac and a MS bitch. The mac I'd use for music, video editing ect and surfing the net. The MS bitch for gaming. Despite having this 98 SE machine since 1999 I have had not troubles preventing viruses and hacking ONCE I learned how to prevent them. Update and clean and keep the kids off the machine.
