Dylan: Recommendations :thumb: — Forum Archive

I've been on a bit of a Dylan kick lately (Bob Dylan, not Matt Dillon :D ) and, in addition to already possessing the Holy Trinity (Bringing It All Back Home, Highway 61 Revisited, and Blonde on Blonde), I purchased the soundtrack to "No Direction Home" and just a few days ago The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan. All of which are excellent

So what next? What to avoid? There's a local bookstore that has remastered versions of some of his CDs set up with the paperback edition of Chronicles, and they include the ones I have as well as Another Side Of, The Times They Are A-Changin, Nashville Skyline, etc. If I get a little holiday cash (or just really bored one day off), I might try and get a couple more Dylan albums (really want to get the Bootleg Series sets from 1963 and 1966) :music:

Avoid anything in the 80's basically!

Street Legal & Slow Train were the last good albums in the 70's.

You HAVE to HAVE Blood On The Tracks. It's equally as good as the three albums you mention. The Bootleg series is ace as well, loadsa very early and rare stuff on there matey.

The Essential is great for the better 80's tracks, and more recently Things Have Changed, Love Sick & Series Of Dreams are all on there.

One of the best sites on the net is http://www.dvdylan.com this is where I have built up my DVD collection, I think I have 14 or 15 Dylan DVD's. If you register then post a message on the trade forum, someone in the US will sort you out with a b&p (blanks and postage deal)

Hard Rain from Fort Worth 1976 is possibly the best LIVE DVD you will ever watch! Plus there are 500+ more titles. I'd love a neworder DVD site like that! Maybe once I've bought this new computer ;)

My missus bought me the paperback Chronicles Vol 1 a few weeks ago, a riveting read - only halfway through it (I'm a busy chappie!) it was only 3 quid from Asda, so major bargain.

Going to see the old bugger for the first time on the 26th at the NEC with Uncle John, Steve & ma dad. Cannae wait.

Oh Mercy is a very fine album, produced by Daniel Lanois, so you'll know how the album kinda sounds from that fact. Series Of Dreams should've been on that one, for sure.

However, I do know a couple of people who were a bit stunned by the fact that Dylan, a prolific writer with many classic lyrics, wound up using the tried (and trite) line: Roses are red, violets are blue on that album.

Slow Train Coming is probably the best of his "Christian" period, the perfect thing to save you from the fiery place for posting way too many pics of D. Hasselhoff...;) , though it doesn't have his best song in that style, which'd be Every Grain Of Sand.

Yep, 'Another Side Of ...', 'Blood On The Tracks', 'Desire', 'John Wesley Harding' and 'Nashville Skyline' are all highly recommended. So are the various 'Bootleg Series'.

If your budget allows it, check out 'The Basement Tapes' as well. Recorded with The Band and very good fun.

And since you like Dylan, try to get your hands on Gene Clark's (of Byrd fame) excellent 1971 solo album 'White Light' one day.
