I've got a music DVD that I want to be able to extract both audio and video tracks from - the DVD has been constructed as three chapters, each containing 5 songs, and I want to be able to extract a couple of songs from within it.
Any ideas on software etc that I should use?
No ideas mate... but whilst were on the subject can I ask a 2nd related question...
I have a heap of tapes which I want to burn to CD (for 'personal use' natually); does anyone know how you can play tapes into your PC, save the data, then burn them onto a CD?
I've seen some CD burners that will take audio inputs direct and burn direct, but they are a bit pricey; these units would probably also work for DVD audio as well... but any cheaper alternatives involving a PC?
You'll need
a lead from a tape deck to your line in jack on the back of your PC
to change the recording input on the PC to line in
to make sure that all other processes are switched off on the PC (virus checkers, online etc)
some software to record the tape audio (I use Soundforge, some use Music Match Jukebox etc)
hit the start button and leave the computer alone for 45 mins!
It records in real time, and will produce a 500mb file for 45 mins of tape, which you will then need to track split, clean up any hiss, pops and crackles (if it's snapped already you are fooked ;)), then burn it to CD.
Takes hours to do one recording, but it is worth it.

I've got a downscaled version of Soundforge which won't let me record from external devices (apart from 'extract audio from CD')- guess it's time to upgrade!
Re; DVD question; I bet Steve (the NI guy... sorry forgot the surname) will have the answer, he seems to be a super techo boffin.
Not sure whether you can simply lift out the tracks from a DVD and reprocess them. If you have a TV card you can play the DVD and record it to hard drive, you can then do what you want with it. Depending on the age of your PC, you may have WinDVD creator installed. Failing that Pinnacle Sudio 9 is excellent, mail me your address.
Try IMTOO DVD Audio Ripper. I guess there's a free trial for it.

Cheers Jim, I'll have a look to see if it's got a TV card when I am back home. It's a brand new machine, high spec.
