Totally. loved it the moment I heard it. Liked a lot of front 242, nitzer ebb that sort of thing. never listen to much of it these days, but headhunter is still on me HD :)

BTW your nickname, is also the name of the SILLIEST species of alien i've evern encountered in a sci-fi series.

we should probably use this thread to discuss which Front 242 albums are the best. any suggestions?

Well Where I heard it was in Bernice Summerfield plays.

bernice (or benny to her friends) is an acrheologist who used to hang around with The Doctor (and some other dubious timelords). The plays are kinda like audio comic books, which are like Dr Who but with Benny swearing and looking for men to take advantage of a lot.

The Grell are her enemisis apprently, although I've only heard them in one play so far. They are EXCEPTIONALLY silly. Before they say anything, they speak a "header" to clarify what they're about to say.... like "Query: where are you going" "Statement: kill her" Very very funny stuff (intentionally too which is nice).

I went to big finish's site there, to see if there was a trailer for any grell episodes but sadly not. ( actually, it's "grel" on the site, definitely "Grell" on my mp3's tho :)

true, hotmail is a pain in the arse. up until two months ago i still had a whopping 2MB inbox space. so, i rarely use it.

the one I'm sending you is a little sillier than most, it is a total pisstake of all those star trek episodes where they ran out of ideas so they made a differnt show using the holodeck. Benny ends up, along wth some Grell, in a computer simulated world based on her book of pantomimes....intensely silly.

If you're any kind of a whovian, there's a real treat as Nick Courtney (brigadier Aliistair Gordon Lethbridge Stuart) plays her cat.

The Brig' was in most jon Pertwee episodes on account of the Dr being trapped on Earth by vindictive timlords (BBC cheap bastards more like). Best bit in Pyraminds of Mars has gotta be Tom doing the puzzle thing with the two mummies. there is only one TRUE Dr.

EDIT: the brig is also responsible for the single most Brittish line in all of Who history......in The Daemons, a gargoyle winged demon thing attacks a party of UNIT troops.... Brig: "Jenkins, chap with wings there, five rounds rapid" priceless.

anywho, speaking of other classic who episodes, robots of death has to be on that list. its pure genius when tom escapes getting crushed by a million pounds of gravel.

Headhunter is a brilliant song.

TYRANNY >FOR YOU< is my favorite 242 album. While FRONT BY FRONT is rightfully considered by many to be their finest hour, I think that Tyranny has more atmosphere and even better songs! OFFICIAL VERSION is also a brilliant album; its sense of atmosphere and of being a complete album is second to only Tyranny. Plus, tracks like Masterhit and Quite Unusual are just fcuking great.

But Tyranny has a more mature sound to me, and, in this instance, that's a good thing. The songs just sounds slightly better, although the writing on songs like Im Rhythmus Bleiben and Headhunter is brilliant. The sound is obviously great too, but I think the production is better on Tyranny. But god, it's just impossible to stop Rhythm of Time, Tragedy >For You<, Sacrifice and especially Gripped By Fear, which I think is the most brilliant track the band ever recorded. I think it's literally a PERFECT song. The song could never be improved in any way. I've never heard a song capture the feeling of a moment in which you realized you have learned a hard lesson so well. The old 242 adage "MOMENT OF TERROR IS THE BEGINNING OF LIFE", which I believe was printed on the sleeve of Front By Front, sums up Gripped By Fear perfectly.

Great band. I haven't listened to them with any frequency for a few years, but they're absolutely fantastic and one of my favorite bands of all-time. Great thread.

Do you have their two official live albums? They're fantastic. Live Target, the semi-official boot from the TYRANNY tour, is fantastic, as well.

I think I bought one on LP, and had it thieved by a mate before I'd heard it through all the way once :)

Work242 the perfect single/ep

Front By Front my fave. Tyranny close but a little too dark. I do have Mixed By Fear which is outstanding. Twas privileged twice to see them live. I have two live cds one I think is illegal. Been a few years since I listened to them.

probably one of my top 20 songs of all time. i saw them on the 2nd lollapalooza tour in 1992--would've liked to have seen them in a smaller venue, but there you go.

I caught them during that same Lollapolloza tour. Freaking tape machine or sequensor broke down but they recovered. They were the only band I wanted to see other than Dinosaur Jr. A year earlier I saw them in Chicago's Riveria.

I saw them is a club during the Tyranny tour... were not all that memorable except that they were loud as fuck! had the major american label money to load them up with lots of nice equipment, and they had it all cranked to "11", which is a good thing.

what does everyone think of their most recent albums? it seems to be a general consensus that front by front and official version are their best.

i was listening to Up Evil last night, and it was pretty good although a little samey. i couldn't really differentiate many songs from one another.

The first single I bought of their's was 'funkahdafi', this always went down a storm when DJing. Later on i used to play 'Headhunter' and 'Welcome to Paradise' "no sex until marriage" both going down extremely well. Bought some stuff after and looked up earlier stuff but none quite as good ('Masterhit' pretty good though). Saw them live at the London Astoria and they were pretty lively. Still occasionally listen to some of their stuff when driving - 'Never Stop' and 'No Shuffle' being especially good... as is 'Im Rhythmus Blieben'. Hated Nitzer Ebb and the rest of that ilk though!

Ahhh... 242. Never have I before heard a band that could create their own world from within the music. Ominous, enigmatic, and dancable. These guys celebrated the sound of the machine in a way I had not heard before and teased my ears with sonics I had never dreamed of. It's easy to say that I was hooked the instant I discovered Front By Front and eagerly sought out their previous work. I'll agree with Church of the KLF by saying that "Gripped by Fear" is brilliant. Tyranny is probably the pinnacle for most listeners but I'll have to say that Up Evil is a sonic masterpiece. Heavy pulsating rhythms, lush imaginitive synthetic landscapes, and the trademark sandpaper-like vocals create a sonic experience that's never been touched before. I think too many sell it off as beiong too noisy or busy(except "Religion," it's pretty brutal on the ears).

For the synth nuts out there.. (Steve, I know you're reading...), the unmistakable sound of the Waldorf Microwave I is all over Tyranny, and there's a ton of wavesequencing happening on Up Evil from a Korg Wavestation from what I can remember. This has been your useless synth info for the day... we now return you to your regularly scheduled programming.

got the fella who does CD's in our pub to do me "Front by Front" with Headhunter(s) on. He said it was the hardest to find CD he's ever been asked about.

i've seen the microwave referred to rather cheekily ( and accurately) as the PPG3.0...takes a load of tech that had been on ice for 5 years+ and stil managed to be way ahead of anything else. As a big Propaganda fan, I perv over all things PPG. (PPG actually sponsored them for a while). I've never made my mind up about the wavestation....yes it can say it's own name with no trickery, but that's offset by it not only being a digital Korg, but a digital Korg approximately contempoary with the evil M1. I virtuals of both, gotta admit the PPG (ok it's an old 2.0 that's emulated, and no waveterm either) gets launched a lot more that the wavesation.

Really must make an effort to get some Front live.

They had a bad scheduling move here as both Front 242 and Bauhaus played Nov.26 '05 in South Florida.The report was 242 was sparesly attended,but had great local reviews,and the tickets were $20. I did goto Bauhaus,but have never seen the front 242. that will be my next mission.

I saw them in 1989 (two weeks after my first NO's concert - good time it was...) and later by the end of the nineties...

In 1989, it was the front by front tour. That was a great show in a full 500 people venue. The way they looked like, the effects on stage, the laser beams and the sounds of fuzzy factories - one of the best concert I have seen ever... Of course, Headhunter has been the highlight of the evening...

The second time I saw them was for the release of a remixed best-of I think... We had the feeling they looked like rap singers and that their music was less interesting that it used to be...
