But seriously, folks: any bass recording tips? Does anyone bother mic'ing up a cabinet, or just DI? I suspect the very best sound would come from judicious mixing of mic and DI, but I'm too goddamned lazy to really work on it.

Logic has a built-in "Bass Amp" simulator plug, but I have yet to fool with it, since it was just added in the last update.

Extra string? Nothing a pair of wire clippers won't solve to make it a proper bass again. ;)

Bass recording... lots of different people will give you lots of different answers so I'll throw one out approach out there. Micing a cabinet and using a good DI to give you two tracks will gives the best option at mixdown. Sometimes the DI track will blend better at mix time, sometimes the amp track works best, and sometimes a blend of both(be careful of phase problems!) gives it just the right touch. Even if you don't use both tracks, at least you have both options at mix time. That being said, most of the time I wind up using only the DI track. Guitars are a different story...

Something I haven't tried yet...

Logic now includes a convolution reverb (Space Designer) and a lot of folks are now running sine sweeps through their guitar/bass cabs and uploading those to the web; ie, here's a sine sweep run through a 4x12 into a 57.

I haven't tried it yet, but it sounds...like a crappy idea really, but I'll give it a go.

Oh yeah: another seemingly good idea is "pumping" the bass guitar by running it through a compressor triggered by the kick drum in the sidechain. Any takers?

Isn't side chaining a bass, just for twats what can't play :) (yes I know that's not what you mean)

Logic uses a full sine sweep? Rich is massively intro programming convolution routines in matlab, and I've messed around with some effects in Cubase based on it.....but don't they usually use single impulse responses?

*raises hand* I'll admit to it.

Sometimes I'll buss the kick and bass to a compressor rather than using a sidechain. All depends on what fits better and the style of the song etc...

Logic can use either a full sine sweep (which it generates from inside the plugin) or an impulse like a starter pistol.

noisevault.com has some nifty impulses you can download when you're not hitting on girls.

I play a Fender Precision through a 70's 100 watt Marshall 'Lead and Bass' (a horrible transistor thing ) which doesn't do justice to the Marshall 4 X 12 cab(with 4 Celestionsfitted)sat underneath it.

For that 'Hooky' sound I simply use a Ibanez Soundtank Bass Chorus pedal.

I have a fearful suspiscion that the slightly dodgy amp is the only thing that's letting that pedal make a hooky noise. Bet if you plug up to something REALLY swish, that pedal sounds all too clean and fluffy for a real hookster racket?

(I assume it's a fairly ordinary kickbox job here)

EDIT: I'm one of those tossers who is instantly dubious about anything that sounds good or works well....it usually just means it's saving for a total failure among other much less sane reasons :D

Well i've written up my hallowed wishlist, wrapped it up, and mailed it Fed Ex Direct to the North Pole. It consists of:

"A) Schecter Stiletto Studio 4-string

or

B) Yamaha BB414"

Here's hoping .

I'd forgotten all about Schecter even existing. I remember Pete Townsend was playing a Schecter Tele back in the '80s.

Speaking of that Hooky sound, any comments on that Glimmers Remix of Krafty? Did they run the bass track through a Boss Ultra Bass Fart pedal, or is the original track like that under all the gloss?
