CD-R Doomsday?

i am suddenly very glad that i kept the tape drive for my Vic 20. Shit don't tapes have a limited life span as well. Now where to I get myself an LP engraver, that should have a nice long life span. does that even exist?

i remember listening to NPR interview of the hippie that controls the grateful Dead's vault of recordings. He saying that cassettes lasted longer than about anything else especially DAT. Of course, CD-Rs were not in the discussion.

Errm What an idiot. (dead head. not you) A spooled tape, be it your cassette or $2000 worth of 2" Ampex will suffer signal print through within months, and adhesives failure eventually. DAT has all the same problems since it doo is tape. However, print through is not a problem on aimuth head systems, that's why it doesn't happen on VHS (what looks like print through on a VHS tape is actully double recording on the bit of tape that was between the erase and recod heads when record was engaged), and a digital system would ignore it anyway.

There are no man made materials that can last these days. Even information stored on real cd's (the ones they used to show us on tv before the patic ones came into the shops, 2 bits of optical glass with the data in between) will degrade because glass is not a olid and flows over time.

wasnt there a claim that factory pressed cds would only last ten years as well?

my original copy of technique still works fine. (1st cd i bought)

azimuth :D only works out that way cos one stripe never lies directly on another and like I say, DAT will reject anything that does occur.

factoy CD's a re a joke, a bit of plastic and some paint sprayed on the back. I want real cd's as we were shown on TV when they were the next big thing. remember eating dinner off them and driving car over them? I actually have a properly built one here somewhere, a BBC FX disc, it's plastic, but the data layers is encased.
