Return of The Breeders/Throwing Muses (O/T)

Well, after the crap news that the release of "Here To Stay" is to be put back a week, comes some very welcome news for a change - the imminent return of the wonderful Breeders - according to the Elektra Records site their long-awaited new album "Title TK" (dunno what the hell that means!) will be with us sometime in May. And this, after I'd almost given up all hope of ever seeing the Deal sisters coming back with another record again nearly ten years on from 1993's "Last Splash".....so this wonderful bit of news means that summer will be coming early after all!! Can't wait man!!

wonderful off-topic. i am a fan, maybe one the few on the board. 8 fucking years, and we're still waiting for a new album. they're playing in detroit this week i think. i really hope they've got a follow up and not just teasing us with these small number of concerts.

he he. sure, but i think they beat new order by a year or two, cuz there's still no real record or tour in sight! actually, who is the longest wait anyways? I think My Bloody Valentine is approaching ten years. and there's no sign of life from the long-loved shoegazer outfit...

I was playing XTRMNTR yesterday, and I saw that Kevin Shields "appears courtesy of Island Records," so I assume he's still under contract.

Plus, he's barely on the new Curve record. So there is a very faint pulse...

Deb left ages ago and hooked up with her girlfriend Katharine in Snowpony, whilst Colm now plays in Hope Sandoval's new band. Bilinda is out on a limb and devoting time to her family instead , so does that mean MBV mk3 will be a Kevin Sheilds solo one man guitar "ark"estra? Somehow i doubt it....

i agree. Kevin shields is the biggest procrasatinator and tease in the world or alt-rock. i don't believe it until i see something in the record shops.

Put it this way - he even promised the music press that a MBV album would be released BY 1997 at the latest. Failing that, at least an EP of new material. But then, I do remember a Melody Maker interview back in 1991 when Loveless was out and he confessed that MBV had probably brought out their last single EVER (ie. "To Here Knows When" aka The Tremolo EP) and they were more keen on the idea of bringing out maxi-length EPs or something because of the direction in which the band were planning to take at the time. Well - since then, what have we had exactly? One perfunctory Wire cover version, and a Louis Armstrong one. That's yer lot.

I read an interview in Alternative Press about six years back where Kevin said he was "getting really into jungle," which I took to mean "not working on a new record." He also related a long story of how he'd purchased a vintage mixing board that they later discovered was rotting away from the inside, but Island was being very cool about it, etc.

Plus, the fact that he jumps at the chance to work with other bands on their material (or record cover tunes) says to me that he's still not written anything.

You know Gnu, maybe you should get resourceful and go and hunt the man down, then without further ado, give him the biggest kick up the butt you can muster and threaten him with severe reprisals if he doesn't get himself into a studio pronto, or, better still, blackmail the lazy slacker into lending you all his equipment and recording gear and go and produce the long-awaited sequel to Loveless yourself!! :D :D You know you want to, man!!

Anyhoo, have fond memories of Belly/Throwing Muses - was into them big time as an angsty teen ;) Listened to my Belly albums for the first time in ages the other day - still sounding as fresh as ever. Not heard any of Tanya's solo stuff though - worth checking out anyone?

yeah, i have her first one, "love songs for underdogs" not as good as her work with belly and throwing muses, but check it out if you're a die-hard fan. a bit more mellow than the belly stuff, but she still rocks.

Tanya Donnelly's coming back with a new record?!! Wow! My god, it's Christmas and my birthday at the same time!!! First the great news about Doves now Tanya's got a newie out too - I'm so excited about this I won't be able to sleep tonight !! ....okay I'll try and calm down now.... toodle pip! :) :);

I purchased Loveless, which was my intro to My Bloody Valentine a few weeks ago. I was blown away, it is a super album totally unlike anything really.

As for new material, I think now ive been introduced to them we will get something soon, it happened with New Order, became a fan in 1997, 6 months later they had reformed for Reading :D.

The Breeders is cool news too. BTW The Pixies are one of the greatest bands of all time, no doubt at all.

apparently the new one is even more mellow.

Been listening to the Belly album "Star" the other day in my car ....its great just hearing Tanya's lovely voice again. Tonight I was playing her "lovesongs for Underdogs" tape just driving back from work in Selby.....it helps pass away the tedium along the route that's for sure. Her voice has that effect on me I nearly fell asleep at the wheel before hitting the A1 - shit! Better play it louder next time, just to keep me alert then!!

If you go right back to when "Come On Pilgrim" came out, you will see some very alarming press photos showing our Charles Michael Kittridge Thompson V looking decidely NOT fat!!! He looked like a 14 yr old college apprentice then. Shocking but absolutely the truth!! Even the gorgeous Kim looked a bit straggly then, and known by the name of Mrs John Murphy.....Francis started to balloon almost the very moment the Pixies started breaking here in Britain.

remember seeing them on the c'mon pilgrim tour with the muses, pixies came on first, excellent gig.

missed them on the surfer rosa tour, saw em again on the doolittle one - one of my best gigs ever - they were awesome & was a bigger venue than the first one (burberries on five ways in b'ham), but the c'mon pilgrim one was similar size (digbeth irish centre/ birmingham hummingbird).

then they did crystal palace & huge places (only saw 'em one more time at the gloucestershire leisure centre, a lot of the songs had changed pace & there were surf interludes & stuff (see hang on to your ego by fb), but was doolittle the one that did it?

Yeah - I saw them on the "Doolittle" tour in Newcastle with (I think, though I may be wrong) Wolfgang Press as support - or some other 4AD band. Francis started getting tubby then..... But they kicked ass like no other. Kim was known by her real name by this point, not Mrs John Murphy.

Saw them on the Bossanova tour in 1990, supported by Barkmarket. Great set - opened with a behind-the-curtains "Cecilia Ann" then went through 30 songs in 90 minutes. Just fantastic :)

Yeah - caught a date on that tour too! Now, Barkmarket - there's a long lost name. They were kinda very loud hardcore weren't they? Caught half their set only so I'm not 100% familiar with them. Know next to nothing about them otherwise - do you, Sloppy?

Nothing at all I'm afraid. Thought they were shit/mildly amusing at the time, mostly because of the singer's helium affected voice every so often that seemed to be his trick. Listened to their album in the local indie shop and decided against it.

reckon you're right with wolfgang press. did joey do a beer can guitar solo at the newcastle venue? was mental - used it as a slide, (but in the right hand i think) and banged the strings & stuff & really mutilated it.

Still on a 4AD type theme, a feature on the NME website says Throwing Muses are recording a new album - complete with Tanya Donnelly!!

Weird bunch they were too - kind of half-liked that album they had out at the time- with a Toilet on the cover!!! especially the sludgy dirty funk stuff, but not keen on the other half. Yes - and Joey DID do his beer-can stunt at that gig as well - during "Vamos" if I recall it - fooking hell, it was wild!! He kept slamming the guitar against his monitors too, causing feedback to ERUPT all over the place! Aye...it was well fooking cool man!!

Kezzie - thanks for the info on Throwing Muses getting back with Tanya Donnelly - most unexpected. Me thinks the Muses were lost without Tanya playing off the intensity of Kristen anyway so that's sort of good news.

aye she did that, though thanks to the muses sans tanya i found galaxy 500 - a support set once in the bierkeller in bristol - the tour when the muses had lampshades on stage with them.

did you see kristens solo tour with the cellist supported by vic chestnut? caught it in a church in bristol (v unusual venue that bjork has since played) totally acoustic but amazing none the less.

I saw that very same Kristin Hersh tour, at the Tyne Theatre in Newcastle - the lass was drinking Newkie Brown!

It was during the time when I was into the whole Throwing Muses/Belly thing big time, and the gig totally blew me away. I've just always thought that Hersh's/Donnelly's lyrics are just amazing :)

I always thought that with Throwing Muses, Donnelly was the light side playing off Hersh's dark side: the combination of the two worked really well on those first few albums before Tanya left - after that it was a bit heavier going/more intense with just Kristin in charge, would you agree Kez?

don't know about kezzie, but I definitely do - Tanya always seemed to write the poppier tunes, though having said that the lyrical subject on the Belly albums is hardly sweetness & light is it?

but yeah, stylistically lighter when there's the two, be interesting to see what the new muses album sounds like.

Hubes your memory is better than mine - I remember thinking how much better they had got since I'd seen them before & I remember him using the can but can't remember the actual song for the life of me.

wonder if it was the same song each time or if he changed it.

Yep I'd agree with that, althought I reckon I lot of it was in the delivery too. Like Dave says, under the sweetness of Donnely's voice, there's a lot of darkness there. Want to go home now and dig my old albums out! I used to listen to 'The Real Ramona' obsessively as a youngster:)

"Not Too Soon" - what a great pop song that is! I recall Hüsker Dü's Bob Mould did some guest vocals on "Red Heaven", but I found the record a lot harsher than "Ramona" mainly cos it was after all Kristen's input only. Mind you, I was a little disappointed by Belly's "Star" album funnily enough - I expected a bit more variety in the songs, even though her lyrics are great as always...

i actually liked throwing muses with and without donelly. i met kristin last summer at a radio station, and she's one of the nicest people around. i've never been to any of her concerts, actually, i've never been to a concert ever!

Ha! You wanna know the first song I fell over to whilst havin the time of me life at the Riverside "Indie Night" once? This'll come as a bit of a shock to you, but it was a slowie: "Song To The Siren" by This Mortal Coil!!!! How did I get to fall over?? Me mate Adam pushed me backwards (that was how pissed we all were that night!) Ahh...the memories.....the memories.... :) I met my girlfriend at this venue you know, and we're still together now.....

i'm under 20! got no friends who like the music i like. what do you think? maybe i've been to a few like a symphony orchestra rehearsal. it was so boring, i fell asleep. but that doesn't count.
