Ok- with the 28th rapidly approaching and a cacophony of sound anticipated by all, I was just wondering what are our all time favourite dance tunes? I am expecting to hear at least 3 of mine - Spaceface , Pacific State and of course Blue Monday. What other "dance" tracks make you tap your feet?

Actually the reason I never could completely embrace Depeche was their lack of dance structure in teh songs. They managed though to make a few great dance ones: Set Me Free (pure disco dance), Photographic Picture (live 83) and Rush (remix).

Maybe "But not Tonight" is stretch, but I've heard the rest played regularly at Goth clubs and they seem good enough to dance to. People are People is a bit short, but there is some extended version of M&S that gets played often and makes a better dance song.

Loved it at the time, had the original 89 or 90 release,even had that fuckin 17 mixes album. But looking back, it was the beginning of the end for The Shamen. These days only Strange days Dream, Goby and....um the other really old one the name of which evaporated from my brain cos I didn't type it first, enter into my brain. for dance music, I must admit I wish I had a decent copy of Phorward (I bought it off Ebay a while ago and never worked out the best way to mp3 it without involving DJ friends :D )

FFS Jem, I thought everyone else had already pointed out my memory was shot to shit....but you reminding me about the BEST of all dance tunes (well, it's a tossopt twixed gerald and 80 for the final running) is just too painful. I've been SHAKING THE FOUNDATIONS with 808state for about half an hour :D
I must confess to there being tears when watching 24hpp alone and Voodoo ray drops in......good to plug the dvd into the hi-fi so it is.
Went to the hedkandi site to see WTF you were on about....oh girl, you'd wet yerself at Rich and George DJin, smooth, vocal house with about 6 twists of weirdness is their signature dish. We're defo gonna have to run a coach from Bolton to our next coastal thrash.
The coach would sink:( grrrrr not if we build a ramp and get a good run.
Was thinking about Gerald then, about watching that series "pump up the volume". It starts off with all the amzing early Chicago and detroit and NY stuff, then decends into horrid soul-pish....then suddenly, the Brits show up, on comes Voodoo Ray and you remember why life is worth living :D

I was at one of them NYE Ally Pally things years back, before New Order did the Temptation thing, maybe 96 or 97. Orbital were the headline act. Last DJ on though was Paul Oakenfold, 5-7am slot or whatever. Did 2hrs of his standard set of the time - Goa trance / Perfecto stuff. And then the houselights came up at the end and there was a big pause, the the lights dropped and he just played the original version of this in its entirity from start to finish. Wasn't there three versions on the original 12" - well, it was the principal one on there. Wonderful moment. Lovely way to end the night and start a new year.

You're having a giraffe! All three of them were absolutely amazing before they ever got a release. The BBE thing especially. Everyone was caning that in London maybe a good year before it got a release. I bought so MANY duff records that year cos I was getting shite info as to who it actually was. Fact that it went straight in at no.1 (didn't it?) on its eventual release says it all. The exposure ruined it possibly but that was an amazing anthem at the time.
I'm old enough to remember when even Children was once considered, um, kewl.
Shame record companies often try to rehash these things in three minute formats and stick a girlie vocal over the top cos they want to sell even more copies. Thus very nearly sullying the memory. See my earlier comments about U2's Lemon (Orange mix) eventually becoming a Grace release. Utter shite.

Now that is a superb way to end the night! You can usually rely on Oakenfold for something a bit special.

Didn't "Children" feature as the opening track on a John Digweed Renaissance mix CD about a year before it went to number one for 100 weeks? Rotten record. Reminds me of those "Hooked On Classics" records you used to get in the 80's. Classical Tunes with a disco beat behind them. Awful.
As for BBE et al, just never been my bag. I'm a sucker classic US Garage. Big vocals and skippy beats. Songs the milkman can whistle ;o)

It was actually the closing track, not the opening track. Plus, if I remember right (and I'm probably talking rubbish here) that CD (which, for the record, I still have and love to this day) was out something like two years before Children got a full release.

The New Order and Orbital nights at Ally Pally were definitely seperate.
New Order was 1998, and Orbital was i think 1999. I was at both of them, and they were both fantastic gigs.

Orbital was definitely separate as I remember watching New Order play 'Temptation' on the countdown, and Orbital do 'Chime', both on the main stage, but different years.

Yeah , i didn't mean they played the same year.I know New Order was NYE 98.The Orbital one i attended was either 96 or 97.Can't recall exactly.Those years just merge into one for me these days.Did Orbital also play there in 99? Millenium eve?
I remember when 'Children' was considered cool. That song drive me nuts trying to figure out who did it, too. I still like it.

Can't remember when Orbital played... I was on the 'special stuff', i.e. pro-plus and Chicken and Mushroom Pot Noodles etc etc. I had a feeling it was the year after NO, but I could well be wrong. Might have been the year Kraftwerk supported Orbital at Homelands and blew them offstage. I just don't know anymore, but hell it was fun, whilst NO were dormant. I'll have to check loopz.co.uk some time.

Also, did anyone else see Bentley Rhythm Ace at Reading 98, after NO, Spiritualised & Mogwai? BRA were fcucking great in the dance tent that night, just happened upon it, and it was brilliant at the time, for once the line up worked quite well that night!

Was thinking about Gerald then, about watching that series "pump up the volume". It starts off with all the amzing early Chicago and detroit and NY stuff, then decends into horrid soul-pish....then suddenly, the Brits show up, on comes Voodoo Ray and you remember why life is worth living :D
