Anyway, much ado about nothing. Here's my list
Kubrick Woody Allen Scorsese (and I haven't even seen the classics, just the Dylan and Band docs and Taxi Driver)
Special mentions to Wes Anderson and Roman Polanski (just watched Chinatown in film class this week...why haven't I seen this movie before? And I thought L.A. Confidential was noir...)
In no real order
John carpenter peter jackson Kubrick I hate 80% of Kubrick's work, but he made the ONLY good (as in ANYTHING LIKE SPACE) sci fi film ever.
And honourable mentions to Tim Burton fro being crackers, the Cohen's for being madder than march hairs who dine exclusively on magic mushrooms in a bad poteen and antifreeze sauce, and Paul Verhoven 1, for all those superb media cut-ins and 2, for enjoying slaughtering beautiful people :D

There are just so many! Honorable Mentions: Tarantino, Miyazaki, Kurosawa, Kubrick, Lean, etc.
I also enjoy some works by Kubrick, Zemekis, Lynch, Antonioni and Fassbinder. But I never could appreciate Scorcese, sorry.

Damn, this is too hard. There are some great directors whose movies I don't particular like, and so-so directors who've made some of my favorites.

David Lynch ('though I hate Eraserhead) Darren Aronofsky ('though he hasn't made enough yet to have a real track record) Mel Gibson (if only for the still frame of himself he stuck in his latest teaser trailer)

i didn't much care for pi, but requiem for a dream is brilliant and brilliantly disturbing. i've got it on DVD, so i can be disturbed whenever i'm up for it.
and i can't believe i left out hal ashby. he's got to be on my list somewhere.

Christopher Nolan, Danny Boyle, David Cronenberg. then there are the big boys of Scorsese, FrancisFord Copola, whacked Kubrick and any of the Kung-fu type genre. L of the Rings can't be ignored to easily.
