They probably mean in "the soccer "world" series".
Same as they do with everything..... suck at it, and invent their own version so they only have to play each other.
If you doubt it.....tell me when the last time an *American* CART or IRL champion won a Grand Prix, never mind the driver's Champ's. And how many countries take part in the Rounders (sorry baseball) World Series?

Presumably 6th is the lowest you appear in any world rankings in any single sport though?!
Considering there's no 5 other countries to compete with you in the likes of Basketball, Baseball, Gridiron ... ?!
Reminds me of a row I had with an Aussie-ex years back who threw a strop once as I teased her about rugby, her shouting, ""There's only you and the Spanish who play football anyways! At least the whole world plays rugby!"" Er, eh?!

For the last fookin time, if it's called the WORLD series it's because it was sponsored by a newspaper called THE WORLD.

There is only 7 good teams in ice hockey too... fortunatly, there is new teams getting better each year.
But Canadia, Russia, USA, Finland, Sweden, Czech Republic and Solvakia are surely the only worthy to mention there.
Germany and Switzerland are getting better each year... but it's still not enough.
Worst in women hockey, there's only 2 teams.. Canada & USA.

you're right, i forgot about the expos. that they ever existed, that is.
edit: and i think baseball is more popular in japan, nicaragua and cuba than it is in the US now. basketball seems to have surpassed baseball as the big sport in the states.

well the Swiss just beat The Czech Republic 3-2, okay no Hasek but Vokoun is a top rate goalie in the NHL

I suspect it's because the USA rarely gets the opportunity to play strong teams in competitive matches.
The ranking will probably go down after the World Cup, but one never knows.
The only result I know of involving the USA was when England beat them over the Summer in Chicago with a 'B' Team. They certainly didn't play like the sixth best team in the world.

no, al, i'm sure we're ranked lower than 6th in rugby, cricket, handball and kabbadi, amongst other sports.

If they're that good at it, I wonder why it isn't popular like the rest of the world.

maybe for the same reason australians are good at 'australian rules football' and the rest of the world has yet to catch on to it? or why there aren't many sumo wrestling stadia outside japan? national sports draw more of a crowd. although footie is catching on, albeit very slowly, in the US.
I'd much rather have my children play football than American football. This was the first year that I missed the entire NFL season. This summer my m8s and I plan to watch the World Cup instead of the Tour.
But twist, is it not weird watching 45 minutes of uninterrupted coverage?
Damn shame the TV networks over there find it so difficult to schedule games in amongst the commercials.

As AgentWood noted, the interest is growing slowly, and even the leading sports channel here, ESPN, immediately replayed last years Champions League final as soon as it was over, and then it was shown again as an Instant Classic later that night on ESPN Classic. Could not have imagined that even 20 years ago, and in the last three months I've come across some Yanks who're fans of Arsenal, Bolton, and Leeds.
i feel a need to defend baseball. Just because europeans dont like it doesnt mean it doesnt have a massive international following. It is huge in japan, central and south american.
Also i come across a lot of 'soccer' fans in my city. Every bar in my 'hood seems to be broadcasting matches. Also there is always a match going on at the cities' parks.

Here is the real fookin' shame. The UK has the BBC. the BBC broadcasts concerts. I cannot think of a concert that is broadcasted in the US except for pay-for-view or Bab's Streisands Sings for menopause.

It's due to lack of competitive games, i.e. not many to score points from, or lose ranking points from. England has lost three competitive games in the last four years, to Brazil, Portugal, and erm Northern Ireland. USA might have lost one, which would have been the last World Cup.
The imminent World Cup should re-shuffle this, although FIFA do seriously need to sort out the North American qualifying group; at the moment it is very relaxed, on the basis that it is good commercially for the USA to be there (which is understandable).
