I have a job interview next week, for a very good job which will mean less hours for more money. This causes a problem, relations between myself and the top boss are at the moment very strained, yet i need a couple of hours off to go to this interview. The whole doctors appointment thing wont work, and neither will the sickie. The big dilemma is:

Do I ask my boss for the time off, and then risk the whole being forced into the 'being treated like shit so they force me to resign' situation, or not? And just try to think of an excuse.

If you're gonna get screwed coz of asking the time off then just phone in sick for the day- he can't sack you for that.... but then again he could sack you if he found out you'd told a fib to get a new job....

A union could help back you up... but I get the feeling you're not in a union... So...

If you have a HR / Personell unit call them 1st for advice / back up... as long as you have given sufficient notice (i.e. a few days worth) then you should be given the time off - they should have a policy about this sort of thing + Tell your boss the interview date cannot be rearranged so you will not be in...

Either way you're going to have to leave your job; so sod it, tell him the truth! If life becomes hell coz you don't get the job contact HR again and take out a grievance...

S'a toughie.

Cant you just put in for a day's leave?

No. Next week is, remarkably, already fully booked. And its too short notice anyway.

stick some black tape to one of your front teeth.

then put some kiwi shoe polish around your eye and say you're in agony beacuse you got filled in at a County match, and need urgent dental assistance.

that should sort it.

Fucking amateur

Get someone to phone in for you saying one of yer parents / grandparents has been rushed to hospital. A female usually works better on this one. It makes it more plausable and they won't question it. Then when you go back to work if anyone does ask, use the heart attack excuse or someone fell down the stairs.

If yer too scared to use a family member excuse, an alternative could be that your house has been broken into and you have to go straight home.

Or should you debate your predicament on the WWW on the off chance that someone from your office might see this anyway?! :skeptic:

Just like your blog!

You've seen Escape To Victory surely, Liam?! Place your arm neatly across two wooden slats and get someone to stamp on it so that you're unfit for work.

Then we can all laugh at Sly (5ft6) Stallone in goal again.

You're gonna have to risk throwin' a sickie then...

The proxy faux sick relative could be useful here perhaps...

Bear in mind that if you get caught lying you'll be in buttock boiling water if the boss has already got a downer on you and he'll be looking to catch you out....

Maybe the interview time / date can be rearranged...?

Totally agree.

All work is shit.

90% of managers are tossers.

I'm planning to set myself up as self-employed 'coz I can't tolerate ass-hole bosses anymore!

From my current experiences, it is far easier to find a new job when you are already employed than if you are out of work.

If you are able to confront your boss and explain the situation honestly, and reassure him that you need his help in attaining the employment you need, he will at the very least find it harder not to give you the refernce you will need your new employer to receive.

You do need to show to your current employer that you will give 100% for him now, and that you are prepared to go out of your way for him (and the rest of your current work colleagues, if and when required).

You've had to call the plumber/or electrician to the house/flat, but you would have to phone in on the day. Or could the company interview you after work I have done that in the past then nobody needs to know until you know you've got the job. Any way good luck.

How about getting the interview shifted till lunch time or later in the day?

and probably also whack of respect. neither boss should scorch you for looking out to better options. if they believe that you're a progress orientied-ype they'll want you on their team/side.

isn't that also what it's about? if you're the commodity for whatever job you're at. $-sucks. fun, but sucks- everyone should be able to live by the sea and eat coconuts but..

how about talking to both employers. establishing a solid foundation with new boss. -look, I have a commitment to be at my current job- can anything be done?

current situation- you know that I'm working for you now but I've got to keep my options open and this has come around..

both will of course say- wow-there are no guarantees, we've got to respect our employees. and make the effort to get, work with and keep happy - he's our best worker.

so many people have got some kind of flu at the moment that all you have to do is simulate the symptoms the day before at work, cough, blow your nose a lot, complain of a headache, and then the next day everyone's expecting your absence anyway

Can't you just ask the interview to be very early or late?

That's what I do, as well as extended lunch breaks ;)

Problem with me is everytime I quit, they forced me to stay... and I'm not kidding.. I did that *4* times, once they came back to get me after 3 months, the other 3 times they counter-offere withing 2 days.. and I did get new jobs each time!

Tell him upfront , if it goes tits up and he begins to give you shit , tell him you believe he is aiming to get rid of you and that you futher believe you can prove a case of constructive dismissal, to this end you intend to take him to the fookin cleaners .via the good offices of an industrial tribunal , furthermore ;although the Manchester tribunal are very fair , you will be takin it to liverpool where statistically the gaffer will get shafted:D

Alternatively pour a tin of cold veg soup in yer wastebasket the day before and ask a fellow worker to help clean it up , cos you think yer gonna hurl again. Next day 'phone in with gastric flu .
