Anybody seen a Joy Division 2 DVD set called Here are the young men/substance? Found it on ebay and not many other places and just wondering what its like? Didnt know whether it was a dodgy vhs transferred onto dvd..Hope its good cause Ive ordered it! it is a boot of that i am sure. it will be a dodgy video rip. i wouldn't pay too much for it. say $20. then again save your money. hopefully something legit may surface soon.
I bought it a year ago on E-Bay for a "Buy-it-now" price of £6.99,which IS worth it.It is a bootleg,but I was very surprised because my Toshiba Player doesn't normally play bootlegs.If it's the same one,which it certainly sounds like,it's Here Are The Young Men recorded at Manchester Apollo,plus other live recordings.Picture quality was shite anyway. Plus live stuff on SOMETHING ELSE on Granada TV,featuring Shadowplay,Transmission and She's Lost Control,AND promos for LWTUA and Atmosphere. There's also an interview recorded about the time JD-Substance came out.Interviews with Tony Wilson and Paul Morley. Comes with a good interactive menu too. Would be worth noting about the official DVD out soon,but if bootleg is cheap enough,go for it.
It's definitely worth £7. A good lad from this site sent me copies three or four years back.
The quality is ok, but I have all the TV appearances in better quality on different videos laying about the place, one of these days I'll pull ma finger out and compile a better copy.
BTW - The Interview with Wilson, Morley et all is the WIRED special which was aired on Channel 4 in '88. The quality on that wasnae the best either.
Still, it will keep most people happy until this official thing finally comes off, just hope to fuck we get She's Lost Control from Granada that no-one seems to have (or wants to share)
Concerning the official release of Joy Division footage on DVD, the spirit is there but there are a few loose ends to be tied up which keep getting put on the back-burner in favour of New Order affairs/the Control film/TV productions in the offing
