Smith Ambulance Attack Condemned

Smith ambulance attack condemned Manchester United and Liverpool have issued a joint statement condemning the fans who attacked the ambulance taking Alan Smith to hospital at the weekend.

Smith, 25, suffered a broken leg and a dislocated ankle during United's 1-0 FA Cup defeat at Anfield.

The clubs' statement read: "These people aren't real fans of football.

"The actions of a few idiots should not overshadow the efforts of all involved to make sure Alan received the best treatment as soon as possible."

Reports in several newspapers on Thursday claimed the ambulance was surrounded by people who threw stones and bottles at it and even tried to rock it from side to side.

The two paramedics - both Liverpool fans - were described as being "horrified" by the hostility shown once the culprits realised the occupants of the ambulance were Alan Smith and Manchester United's club doctor Mike Stone.

A spokesman for the Merseyside ambulance trust confirmed the attack: "It did not result in any delay in transferring the player to hospital but the trust cannot condone this type of behaviour while administering emergency treatment."

Smith, who later underwent surgery on the injury, was given a general anaesthetic before he left the stadium so was not aware of the attack on the ambulance.

Les Lawson, secretary of the Merseyside branch of the official Liverpool Supporters' Club, told BBC Radio Five Live: "The Liverpool supporters who were actually inside the ground gave Alan Smith a standing ovation as he left the field.

"As far as I am concerned, the people who attacked the ambulance are not genuine Liverpool supporters because you just don't do that sort of thing.

"You never know when you are going to need the paramedics yourself or for a member of your family, so how would they feel if mindless idiots came out and tried to shake an ambulance and throw missiles.

"These are just not genuine football fans. Words just fail you really.

"I don't think the relationship between the two sets of fans will ever improve really because there is a great rivalry and the fans just don't like each other," he added.

things have certainly got worse in the last 10 years.

In the 96 Cup Final against Yoo at Wembley, we were outside a pub, when a big advert featuring Peter Schmeichal rolled past slowly on wheels. cue beer bottles, hamburgers & all sorts being thrown at the offending picture of the Dane. I admit i was was one of them. but it was only a laugh really...

But, to try to overturn an ambulance carrying an injured player is a disgarce. The Loons who go the match never grow up, and it only is ever a few dozen. No more.

I watched the Benfica match in my local pub. As kick-off approached a load of young lads came in. Who the fuck are these we all wondered. Turns out they were BANNED Liverpool yobs, banned from going to Anfield and banned from going to Europe. little pretend hard cases taking over one end of "our" pub. But only ever hard, when they're in numbers. not when they're on their own.

Well fuck off then...and go and drink somewhere else.

They're a minority - every club's got them and every club blames then when something like that happens. But its true..the footie is a sideshow to them, not the main event which is their own show.

Thick as bottled pigshit...

Remember being in queue to get into Anfield for league cup tie in early 90s and being spat at the whole time by those friendly locals we're always hearing about. Bloke in front of me complained to the rozzers about it, and he got a reply along the lines of "it's better than razor blades across your face, mate".

Walk on, walk on......

Nice bizzies in Liverpool. A bit short sighted though.

It didn't mention that it that report. Were they really trying to turn it over?

That's a bit OTT. Typical of the type of "hard in numbers" cretin that ruin our streets today. If Smith had been concious with two working legs, they'd have shit their pants and run away.

I agree with you: a bit of spitting and name-calling, while not savoury, is pretty much the form these days. And Utd do ask for it. Trying to turn over an ambulance with a crocked man inside though, there's nothing brave or witty about that.

But like they say, it's that bad element in Mersyside that gives the other four percent a bad name.

The Scally's always caused a problem at Glastonbury.

The solution was to build a fence around the festival site, to keep em out. It would have been easier to build a fence around Liverpool to keep em in and let us festival going folk enjoy the country side.

Last night's Standard reported them as trying to tip the ambulance over. And chanting "Munich Scum" as the same time.

Well, at least they got it right on one count. :uhoh:

The ambluance service should refuse to attend the ground...that will force it to close.

Then CAN do that u know, they've done it here a few times because of them being set fire to, stoned and shot at....usually by the patient's mates.

Fradley got one thing right...this IS a fucked up country.
