Last night, I mailed my community entry off. I did this by attaching it to an email. the email was sent from Linux, and the file attached from it's home on a drive the windows machine has exported as a share to the linux machine.

Later last night, I put a region code back on my DVD rom (it had lost it in an attempt to help brother Digi). I unmounted the windows shares from the linux machine (I have to do this because Xp just crashes network shares when it reboots, and that has nasty effects on anything connected to it) and rebooted. Machine came back up again.....DVD drive now SAYS region 2 and still cannot read R2 discs. But this morning....I went to try and hear some NO.....and there is no network. The Xp box no longer shares it's drives nor mounts the shres exported to it from the other machines in the house.

I wouldn't mind but I aint touched it's networking in months (that fisher price interface gives me mouse rage).

So I have no network anymore, and since i didn't DO THE DAMAGE, not the mildest idea what to do about it. AND I am gently going insane because I unshared and reshard a drive (hey, you know window, of and on is usually the best fix)...and for nearly an hour it's been reading file permissions on the drive before sharing it......the fact that it still wont be shared at the end of this, and the fact that even if it were, Windows file permissions are giberish in the real world of real computers is really starting to make me very errrrrrr bad tempered.

This means I have about 4 NO tracks in my collection now as the rest are on the winbox ( I COULD play them there I suppose, but it's sounds so shite...even with 150 quids worth of soundcard.)

anyway......if anyone knows in what way the DVD region is connected to the network sharing system...please tell me...else...send me a version of cubase that works in linux so I can format this fucking tumour once and for all.

I love windows too. It's just cost me a lot of money to get all mine done. They're brilliant. You can look out of them, and guess what? You can look in as well. Mine open too. Marvellous.

That really doesn't make any sense...I switch back and forth all of the time for that specific reason and I never had it happen and I can't even begin to fathon why it would. Did you try google?

The point is....if a geek like me can't fix this spontaneous change on my machine.....what hope would a mere mortal...if it was my linux box, I could open 2 text files and read the problem and fix it and save it and restart the network...but in windows is "press the brightly coloured button and get a made up error".

And I've sat many a person including a 6 yrold and 3 blondes down at a linux box and heard no complaints...I mean...they couldn;t install it...but could they install windows either?

And besides...of course my beloved aint perfect....if it ran cubase and GPl..I could format the crapbox and be done with it.

Anyway I am using Acronis Trueimage to fix it from the backup I made on Valentine's day (sad cunt)...and guess what the last thing you see before the acronis interface appears.....yup..."loading linux"..see even windows developers use it (actually the guy who founded Gentoo is one of MS senior programmers).

And yes....my linux box did a VERy simillar thing just after xmas...no networking at all, and for no reason I could find (in the end I ralised I HAD done it myself), but I didn't have to format anything to fix it like i have to now.

C'mon man if you want easy....you know it's a Mac...neither windows or linux....FFS design students can use them LOL

I honestly can't imagine that is the true cause either, but it is the one modification I made to the system since the previous boot.

Googling for windows trouble is useless because it's error messages 1. cannot be pasted. and 2. are meaningless....I mean...almost ANY network problem generates.."the network cable is unplugged...even if windows own activity monitor is blinking away)

Anyway, thanks to the magic of Acronis trueImage....it's all sorted out now.

If I could afford one.....I'd buy one.

BUT, the windows machine is really for Music production (which the mac excels at) and games (which the mac has NONE of..FFS you can't even buy a steering wheel for it). Everything else is on linux (which is basically OS-X but free LOL)

I have a bunch of freeware audio programs for linux. I'm at work at the moment but will send you an email tonight.

I understand the games thing with the Mac but for video and audio it is far superior.

Actually, Xp's been OK with me until today....but it says a lot for it's ease of use that someone who can handle the "difficult and Geeky" Unix found it easier to wipe his HD than fix it. And also that no one ran in here to say...twat, all you need to do is....and that includes at least one more than competant IT pro who posted to have a laugh at me ;)

BTW...regarding system restore...the last time I used it was on ME, it was told to use 500MB of disc, and actually used 3000, and the day I needed to restore (cos IE5.5 has broke javascript support and I downgraded it, which stopped ME booting as IE is it's shell)...it got half way through and stopped.....rendering the machine format ready. not getting bitten twice. It was easier when the two OS's lived on one machine, I could just

dd if=/dev/hda1|gzip>backup.img

and that was me backed up, but when windows is on it's own it needs all sorts of life support for backup.

It's not just not-the-best OS I ever used...it's probably the worst, tho I'll admit XP is nearly out of the Beta phase :D

By 2012, there should be a version that is actually readyfor release and is actually easy to use.
