I had something very similar happen to me on the 2k box just 8 months ago. Grant this - the 2k setup I've tweakered with had made it quite customized and stabler than it already comes as (I do hold a great respect for the OS on the right hardware.) and I'd been trasferring rather large amounts of data over to the containment *nix box, Ginger, so I could clear off some space for a few other projects I was on.

And the shared drive disappeared mid-transfer. So I twiddled with remapping, reassigning, re-sharing to no avail. Brought the network up and down, then rebooted Fred the win box.

And nothing. I keep my Fedora box pretty spare in terms of no vid or audio cards - it truly is just a wee server, so I couldn't just see the files there. I started thinking on what could be done, and how the network had been working, and it occured to me to copy and paste the share folder from Fred from the originating location in documents&settings to the desktop and back again - lo and behold, there all the information showed up as being there and was once again workable for all who use this computer.

I had figured it'd been the indexing service or the backup service that gave me the issue, but they were looked into and both had been working as they needed to. Just a bizarre flap on the Windows highway.

(And the funny tale is that regarding ME (Millenium), I managed to have that running fairly stable at one time, too. It just hated certian games of mine. )

Yeah, windows is supposed to be easier to use, and my Ubuntu boot got network support on the halls almost immediately, whereas it took me several hours to get it working on Windows. There's a lot of fiddling around on Linux, but there's similar fiddling around on Windows and it's often a lot more time consuming and tedious.

Fuck, I love linux just because you can type apt-get install (program) and that's all you need, automatically downloads it and puts everything in the right place. Perfect.

This said multimedia support is poor at best, for linux straight out the box.
