I'm going back oop north for about a week in the spring. I could stay at a hotel or hostel but I am thinking of trying Couch Surfing. I like meeting new people and I'm going alone.

http://www.couchsurfing.com basically it's staying with people who have the space. The site also has a series of checks against a person such that if you can get a person with the highest verification level with a ton of other members vouching for them, it's the same as staying with a friend of a friend. And if I used this service I'd only stay with someone who's passed the highest verification and has heaps of people who's stayed with them vouching for them.

I'm not worried about my safety anymore than I would if I stayed in a hostel.. (actually probably less eeep)

but has anyone used this service?

A stranger from up north's sofa, that sounds as safe as defusing bombs with toe nail clippers.

actually, I forgot to say, what has been your experience in hostels? I've never stayed in one myself.
