LONDON (Reuters) - Pop star Robbie Williams has bought a stake in English third division soccer team Port Vale, the club he has supported since he was a boy.

"Although I can't be at the Vale often, my investment is just to say that my heart is still there and I'm a huge supporter," Williams said in a statement.

"I'm really excited about what we may be able to do with the club in the future."

Williams grew up in Stoke-on-Trent in the English Midlands, where Port Vale was founded in 1876.

Club chairman Bill Bratt said he welcomed the investment, the size of which has not been disclosed.

"I'm extremely pleased and excited that Robbie has invested in the club. It clearly shows that he cares about Port Vale FC and its future.

"It's now up to the board and all at Port Vale FC to ensure his investment is used wisely in helping to secure the future at the club."

In December 2002, cash troubles forced Port Vale into administration before it was rescued by a fan-based consortium led by Bratt.

The club has never tasted top flight soccer, achieving its highest league position in 1931 when it finished fifth in the second division.

It is currently lying 11th in the 24-team third division.

I know and understand your views on this. But it is sad that alot of non premiership teams have to rely on this type of gesture.

To be honest, I don't mind. Vale are about as unfashionable as football clubs get and at least Lardy Boy Williams hasn't forgotten that he's Potteries scum at heart. I'm sure he'll enjoy watching the results roll in from Vale Park at his plush pad in the Hollywood Hills.

....or, indeed, the Cooks? Surely Robert is in a different league to Norm, though? Willams was last spotted as a semi-regular at Chelski if I remember rightly: I guess even he can't compete with Russian multi-billionares....

Their shareholders. That's what being a PLC means. It means that the entity in question sexists solely to generate income for those who have risked money by investing in it. That's what all those MU Rowdies fans' "Not For Sale" anti-Glazer banners were so darkly funny - once you're a PLC, you're ALL ABOUT being for sale...

With so many shady characters around and so much emphasis at boardroom level with the bottom line, I'd steer well clear of investing in any club. (If I could afford to. Which I can't. So it's all academic. But I like to shoot my mouth off.)

But if he wants to throw money at Port Vale (which will no doubt end up greasing the palms for some shady agents/consultants/financial directors), hey, why not?

If Fat Boy Robbie wants to throw a bit of cash at Vale, then good luck to him... I'm sure his hearts in the right place, even if much of that investment probably won't end up doing what he intended it to do... Gives the Vale fans and Fat Boy something to be excited about for a bit... Elton John's involvement with Watford didn't exactly bring unreserved success but at least the Hornets' fans (I'm from Watford originally) had something to believe in for a bit...
