Having done a little bit of 'shopping', got talked into entering HMV, which is always a mistake where I am concerned. A 'few' pounds later.....armed with material to start a war..........of sorts. Replaced another few 45's and another several 33's.........who said HMV were unhelpful? Lovely people.
If anyone knows how I can STOP MSN MESSENGER popping up uninvited, I would be grateful as having downloaded all of the above, I would love to listen to it without MSN bugging me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:)
I was in HMV in Brum last week.yes very nice people and i bought Pet Shop Boys POP ART for £6 .Because i'm a Birmingham CITY BOY

Right click on the people who keep bothering you and block them.
Or change your status to offline.
You'll see who's online, but people won't write to you.
Or, like Steve says, just turn it off.
Did you go into a real store, or download MP3s from them?

I have had that.It opens of it's own free will.A virus? Spyware?
Not sure. It can be set it up to open automatically and remember your password but once it's turned off it should stay off.

to stop it running, you can either fuck around for weeks in it's own menus OR, click
Star>run type "msconfig" go to "startup" and uncheck msmess or msmsgs or whatever it's called.
it's also possible that it is windows messenger, which is a system service not a program, this will need culled from the system services menu of msconfig....but FFS be careful in there, all sorts of unlikely looking things are vital.
better still...open the run prompt and type... control appwiz.cpl (or fanny around through the control panel menus for a month til you get the same thing.....add remove programs) And uninstall the viral POSwee bastards shouldn't have installed it anyway.
Oh and as what you asked me about windows and passwords....LOL yeah right...MS security ROFLMAO.
Kath, fire up MSN, choose 'Tools, Options' click on 'general' on the left and choose the options that suit your needs. Always best to deselect everything and just start MSN when you want to use it.
But if it still pops up after doing that then you have some cheeky monkey program firing it up for you.

I don't get any of those problems. It's either on or it's off, as I decide. Never seen it turn itself on or anything spooky like that.

And yes, your way works best (if it IS MSN...not that other thing that's a service,or at least was on my vanilla Xp Pro). Actually I just remembered if you do it with MSconfig, and then manually run MSN, the menu option you describe will still be there and set it back to autorun, which is where people get the mysterious regenerating MSN from (among other rarer occurrences)
BTW, with regard to my own recent windows dramas, I have thus far asked 3 well qualified people, one with and MSCE ( like that means anything) if they had ever seen such a thing....they said NOPE. trust me to have a unique screwup. Anyway, not happened again and my bacup lives on the HD just in case :D

I'll bet whatever problem you have with XP is down to a poorly written driver (assuming you are doing music stuff). Windows downfall has always been a lenient (or ignorant?) OS kernel. But that is changing in Vista, so long as you you Vista vertified drivers But, as ever, you'll need an upgrade just to achieve the same performance :\ohwell:
hey, dont accuse me of being an apostle of msoft. I like to take a balanced view. Horses for courses and all that. I certainly wouldnt recommend Linux to my mother, or msoft to anyone who has to pay a penalty on less than 99.9% downtime :)
well in my case, the mechanic believes the car to be "Christine" and the engine to be a lump of evil possessed by demons, but I take your point.
Vista certified drivers....hmmmm that should offer a wide range of hardware, considering XP howled over every driver I ever installed on it, some of them for less than cutting edge devices.
Don't think my problem is a driver ctually, (driver issues are why my radeon "forgets it's place" and stops rendering now and then).....this was just bizarre, internet fine, all networking dialogues reading nominally and yet no file sharing in or out between that machine and any other on the network. Still, thank God for backups eh? Speaking of which, I FEAR installing XP, hence my love for backups to avoid it :D And I STILL insist, that yer granny would do fine with a preconfigured penguin box, she'd never know what it was, just that it didn't go loopy all the time. it's "improvers" who have the hardest time with it, cos they are good with windows and everything seems all weird and alien.....and it probably wont have their killer app of choice either (doesn't have mine).
HMV....oh yeah...the topic....they're looking at getting kicked out of the channel islands, so no more VAT free web orders

file sharing? using what protocol? You need to look at everything you've installed that hooks into the TCPIP stack (assuming that all relevent ports are listening anyway)

SMB as far as I know (well samba to linux). The thing is I made no changes at all to anything within 100 miles of the network. And there's VERY little active that uses tcp/ip...remember most of my life is on the other machine.
Netsh seems a useful (and therefor hidden and undocumented :D ) little tool should it throw another wobbly....at very least if I toggle status with it it should give me a reasonable description of WHY it wants to stay off line.
