Just been watching DOWNFALL on TV about Hitler's last days in the bunker.Bloody good film,sorry to have missed 1st hour of it,caught last 2 hrs.Not just Hitler's suicide,but the outcome of everyone else,when the Russians reached the city.
Alexandra Maria Lara,who's gonna be playing Annik Hoare,was in it.She reminds me of a slightly older Natalie Portman.Very nice
I was tempted to post a topic on here about the film.
I just sat gripped through all three hours of it with subtitles, and what a powerful film it is. Been talking about it non-stop on MSN all night since.
If you ever get the chance, please see it. It's not obviously a pleasant film to watch, but it's accurate and amazingly produced and acted entirely by Germans.
I haven't a clue who he is, but the chap that played Adolf himself should have won an Oscar with subtitles.
It's Bruno Ganz.He played a guardian angel in Wings Of Desire,which got remade with Nicolas Cage. The bit where Goebbels' wife gave the kids cyanide pills was awful to watch.
That was the worst bit, and apparently cyanide does react that quickly.
Hats off to the German film industry though; I didnt think they had it in them to make such a compelling but brutal film, and especially on such a taboo subject over there.
It makes any Brit portrayals seem rubbish; the subtitles made it look so authentic.
Thanks for the tips on this film, I usually watch everything having to do with WWII on any of the Times/History channels here, don't know how I missed track of this film. Loved Bruno Ganz in Wings as well.
I saw it in the theatre and then purchased the dvd when it came out. I kinda shrink in my seat whenever Hitler went on one of his tirades Hate to have personally witnessed that in real life.
And yes I could not help the flood of tears when Magda Goebells murdered her children. Bad enough to show that but when they show her giving them the knock out drug and then going back with the poisen it is as if she murdered them twice. I noticed the look of contempt she gave Joseph after she finished. He just stood outside the door as his kids were being put to death. Weak bastard.
I look at that Hitler Youth kid and think of the Pope. Anyone that lived through that must cherish peace above all else.
Historically accurate for the most part except for General Weilding was never ordered to the Bunker, rather he went there to reestablish communication with the Army Group he was part of. That was when Hilter accused him of deserting. The truth was that his superior officer ordered him to reposition in such a manner that would leave Berlin ripe for the Soviets.
