i haven't watched any awards ceremonies for years.

I used to watch it religiously till SKY got hold of the screening rights to it.MURDOCH=CNUT.

I realize that they need to play music to get the winners off the stage without going on too long, but playing music while they're giving their speeches?

what a classy guy Altman is.... I loved his speech!

I've only seen two Altman films all the way through (MASH and The Player), yet I can honestly say he's one of the best film directors ever. Just based on those two examples alone, I'm glad he got an honorary Oscar (though something tells me Fox News will twist his whole comment on his "heart transplant" into another example of callous liberal Hollywood regard for you and me, the common folk who make America great. Or some other such bullshit like that )

I would highly recommend that you watch Altman's film Gosford Park. It is blissful. Okay, actor Jeremy Northam is blissful in it, but Altman was clever enough to cast him!

In my opinion, you need some variation. Capote got Best Actor award and Ang Lee got Best Director, that I expected.

crash deserved to win--it was the best film of the year in my opinion.

but an old schoolmate of mine lost out in the best documentary feature category to march of the penguins. damn birds.

I take it you've never seen O.C & Stiggs then. I don't mind watching Pret A Porter on TV, parts of it I enjoy, but there are too many parts that I don't (like WTF was Julia Roberts doing in there?). Have to admit that Sophia Loren looks divine in it though.

Crash did nothing for me, too contrived. Not saying it wasn't a good movie but didn't really have the 'wow' factor.

I felt surprisingly emotional when Tsotsi won best foreign movie - didn't much care when Charlize Theron won her Oscar, as it was for a Hollywood movie and she doesn't sound remotely South African anymore. To hear director Gavin Hood on stage speaking with a real South African accent and saying a few Xhosa words - excellent. Should be seeing the movie in the next month, so can't comment on the merits of the award yet.

I think the problem that the Oscars face is not the question of being "out of touch with the mainstream" American culture (which considering how it's now "God, Guns, and *No* Gays", might not be such a bad thing), but the fact that the movies often up for best picture never play anywhere other than big cities. The last time I was ever able to see most of the Best Picture nominees was in 1999/2000, when some buddies and I made the commitment to seek out everything up for the big awards that year. That we managed to do it in the shitty little corner of the South where we live is amazing, but since then it's been all about limited releases to big cities and "Big Momma's House 2: This Time It's Personal" in the theaters around here

Sure, there might be a limited demand for Brokeback or Capote, but I'd like to see them. Also would like a shot at seeing Good Night and Good Luck (btw, Clooney's acceptence speech was the best of the night imho. I've grown to like the guy ever since he stopped being "the Batman with rubber nipples"). But none of those played anywhere around here recently. There needs to be a forum for viewing of quality films when they come out, and not just the stupid summer blockbusters. Quality films are getting a short shrift in the American landscape right now, and that's a shame. I guess it's all about the infantilization of our culture since the bogeyman started warning us about "remaining vigilant" and keeping us in fear of some vague enemy, we've lost something daring and creative in our culture over the last twenty or thirty years. And I really did not mean to go off on this rant, so I'll wrap it up now

& any films that may look interesting to see are in and out of theatres so quickly that it's close to impossible to catch them. after that the film may show up in a smaller venue bu then to catch it advertised is a strange science. after that it will be months until the DVD gets out and by then we've long forgotten to search it out. still would like to see dozens of the older black and white ! films.
