I thought it would be interesting to know what people’s choices are for the top three women they admire the most. The women can be fictional characters or real life figures, dead or alive, but excluding family members. You set your own criteria for selecting your list of the top three females of all time.
Here is my list of the top three women I admire the most:
Thursday Next – a fictional character created by author Jasper Fforde, this woman epitomizes strength in character while still being quite feminine. Thursday is a literary SpecOps who goes through both literature and time periods to correct injustices and inaccuracies caused by evading crooks. Thursday drives a fast radical car, lives primarily in Swindon when she’s not hiding in a book, has a pet dodo called Pickwick, and moonlights as a part-time vampire huntress for her allies if necessary. She’s smart, resourceful, and is a deadly foe in battle. But most of all, Thursday has an undaunted spirit that is rare indeed. She never lets up on a case or on a hunt for a criminal, even when everything in the world is against her. Despite all odds against her, Thursday continues to take on the establishment (Gotham Corporation) in order to bring back her lover Landen from eradication. Now that is what I call true love! She is one lady who is simply remarkable.
Carole Lombard – a comic actress who rose to fame primarily in the 1920s and 1930s due to her glamorous looks and wicked sense of humor in such movies like My Man Godfrey, for which she was nominated for an Oscar, Carole was notorious for her pranks and her outrageous comments, in any context whether it be in a dinner with diplomats or on the set. She was very much tongue-in-cheek, and her brainy humor won over many hearts. For that matter, any woman who was loved by both William Powell and Clark Gable must have been doing something right with the male sex. Her love affair and eventual marriage to Clark Gable ended tragically with her untimely death in an airplane crash. Clark Gable is said to have been so broken up with her death that he immediately enlisted in the army during the war as a way to deal with his grief. Carole’s outrageous naughtiness, contagious laughter and wit live on through her movies.
Amelia Earhart – this courageous woman was the first aviatrix in 1932 to solo pilot a plane over the Atlantic. She was the aviation editor for several women’s magazines, and she inspired many through her bravery and her independent spirit. Amelia also flew against social norms and conventions of all types, in both her professional and personal life, particularly with her marriage. Interviewers remarked on her petite figure, shy charisma and modesty. Her love for aviation is evident in her journals and published writings. She challenged gender bias and encouraged others to pursue adventure for adventure’s sake. Her mysterious disappearance during a plane flight sparked a massive search by the United States government that amounted to $4 million dollars (a lot of money during those times). Also, writers even today continue to use her disappearance as a plot device in both novels and tv episodes (e.g., Star Trek: Voyager).
