Maybe I'm a calious a-hole, but isn't this like feeling sorry for someone who demands to play street hockey on the freeway and gets hit?

But things like this shouldn't happen, regardless of the risks involved - you have to feel sorry because the guy was doing something he believed in, something for good, sometimes you have to take risks if you feel strongly about wanting to change something... So I feel for his family and friends... But hey, at least Milosevic has got his...

But perhaps he wouldn't have wanted anyone to feel sorry for him? Maybe he knew the risks and accepted them because he thought the could do some good (I'm only guessing, I don't understand how Christians think, it does seem an excessive risk to take). Possibly he'd say save your sympathy for all the Iraqis getting killed (up to 36 a day now) who don't have a choice.

Personally I think we should offer to swap Tony Blair for the hostages, as a kind of prisoner exchange. Then work through the list of all the gullible New Labour MPs who believed the WMD claim and voted for the war to exchange for as many innocent hostages as possible. Obviously anyone going to Iraq after we run out of New Labourite fools to swap for them does so at their own risk.

Interesting article in the Telegraph today, from the SAS solider who quit rather than return to Iraq. He doesn't have a very high opinion of the US military, who he claims appear to be making the same mistakes as in Vietnam, treating the entire population as the enemy.

with a lot of Christians in the USA, the attitude is that the Iraqis are inferior people/culture/religion, a racism that is not spoken, that they are all pretty much the same. so was this guy a really swell nice guy or arrogant, did this guy have respect for their culture. either he was really arrogant or he wanted to sacrifice himself for the cause. i don't feel happy for his suffering but hey, he made the decision

Pumped, On the guy protesting funerals, nothing is more insensitive that that. Family and friends are greiving, and this a-hole is protesting ignorant BS. People like that should be simply shot. No trial or arraingments necisarry.

404, As for the soldier not going back over, I'd bet he's worried more about his hide than the reasonings for going back over. I don't see how this is real news. One guy refusing is no big deal, kind of par for the course; now if a whole unit refused to go, than I would take notice.
