hint: he's not wearing a hat.

and he's not shooting lee harvey oswald, either. ;)

I see him. right at the very back there!

not 'at the back.' explain further. back of the photo, back of the crowd, back of oswald....

:brow:

right at the top. About a centimetre in from the left. Looks like sort of.

Isn't peel the guy whose face is half blocked in the top right corner?

what do you mean 'half blocked'? do you mean obscured by another person?

Yes, someone is blocking half of Peel's face. The man in question is the second guy diagonal from the cowboy escorting Oswald on the right of the photo.

he's on the right side, but no one's blocking his face....

Sorry about getting the right and the left mixed up. Well, is it right? Wow, about 20 seconds ago!

Aside from the L-R fiasco, that's how I knew. It's weird that he was an eyewitness to America's mysterious conspiracies.

yep. that's him, coming out of the oswald press conference. this is the photo taken directly before oswald was shot. there is another taken from a different angle where you see oswald react to the gun. peel isn't in that one.

you can also see peel in the video footage of oswald's press conference.

this is really weird. just as i was first writing this, oswald defence lawyer by the fall started on my windows media player!

Woody..

Don't want to burst a bubble, but the following is an interview with the great man himself at a website called Molara. He's pretty adamant he wasn't there during the shooting, but was there earlier..

I'm totally confused, and I know Mr Peel had an excellent memory.

Molara: You were based in Dallas in 1963. I have heard that you were in the room when Jack Ruby shot Lee Harvey Oswald?

John Peel: No, I wasn't but I was in a room about 3 days prior to that with them both. They had a late night press conference when they first arrested Lee Harvey Oswald. I was with my mate Bob and we were cruising round trying unsuccessfully to chat up women in drive in restaurants. We thought we'd round off the night by checking out the police headquarters - when we found out what was happening I told the policeman in charge that I was a reporter for The Liverpool Echo and Bob was my photographer and they just let us in. My so-called photographer didn't have a camera and I didn't have a piece of paper or a pen. Granada did a documentary in which they showed footage from that night to prove that Ruby had been at the press conference - they panned across the room and there was me and Bob. I did call the Liverpool Echo at one stage and they did one of those classic local paper things - "Heswall Man in Dallas - John Ravenscroft, son of noted Liverpool cotton broker Robert "Bob" Ravenscroft. . ." nothing at all about what was happening in Dallas.

that's not possible, as kennedy was shot on the 22nd and oswald the 24th. oswald was only exposed to the press on the night of the 22nd and just before his shooting on the morning of the 24th so peel couldn't have been in a room with oswald and ruby 3 days before oswald's death.

interestingly, i saw an interview a number of years back where he said that he WAS present at the shooting after the final press meeting and they showed this very picture. hmmmm.

It definitely was, Woody..

I was surprised i didnt hear it in the national outpouring of grief when he died. Sorry, I had to Google it. Would much rather it was true!

i mean cracking story that he was there at all. to be a part of that much history.

you should've just played along. let me live in blissful ignorance thinking that was him all my life. ;)

OK, Burt. It's not trivia. Your word choice is correct :). But it's still a bizarre coincidence that Peel was in the same area as Oswald. Spooky.
