A question that my mother and I are knocking around:

Is it appropriate to sing amazing grace at a funeral mass?

I don't mean "oh that'd be pretty" because it will be. I just know it's not a catholic song and i was wondering if it's been done and if it's ok to do it.

My grandmother's already passed but I don't want to give her a heart attack in the beyond by singing the wrong song at the funeral!

How about having someone play or sing Ave Maria? I was baptized as a Catholic, yet I don't go to church.

It is more used these days, even through a full funeral mass. Depends solely on the church where it is to take place: more traditional churches might have qualms with it, but more contemporary or middle of the road congregations are fine with it.

I've seen two Catholic funerals recently that did use it. Both in what would be considered more conservative churches. I don't know if anyone's written a law on the yea or nay of it though.

ask the priest what he thinks. when organising my mohter's funeral i met with her pastor, and we choose some music.

Pretty sure I've heard it at a Catholic funeral. Met my grandmother and mother at mass last Sunday and # 586 in the song book was Amazing Grace.

i head it before at many catholic masses.

We had it at our wedding in a Catholic Church.

ave maria was played at my brothers funeral , at his fathers request, i think you can play whatever you want, except maybe ding dong the witch is dead.
