So as I was reading something on the nme website about World Cup songs, it mentioned Ian McCulloch doing a song with the Spice Girls. So I wikipediaed it up, and it was true. I like Echo & The Bunnymen a bit but I have no idea why he did that song. Does anyone have any background knowledge on why he did it? I'm kinda out of the loop.

As a Scotsman, you wouldn't think I'd know what you were on about, but it was England's official France 98 song (Twat & Skinner did a rehash of 3 Lions) It was really a Bunnymen (1998 vintage, ie Mac & Les) song. It was called "Top Of The World" (I'm sure) and really it wasn't too bad, but to glam up the Bunnymen they stuck in the Spice Bow-wows in the chorus and video. Be thankful your song wasn't by Del Amitri & wasn't called "Don't Come Home Too Soon" !! Scotland's was and we did !!

It was Number 7 in the UK-Charts.

Didnt Marr make an appearance on it as well?

crap, i remember that one! it was so-so; pretty much pop fluff--good for TOTP.

that del amitri song was about as sad as the scotland team. should've been called 'don't come home at all'.

i'm not Scottish but Primal Scream's anthem -'The Scream Team And The Barmy Army Meet The Big Man Up Town'- for Scotland's Euro 96 campaign was/is a top song

Just for the record it is called a 'tam o'shanter' or a 'See You Jimmy Hat' for the ignorant amongst us...!

I went to the three matches in France 1998, we weren't that bad but what surprised me most was that an incredibly average Brazil team could get to the final (I have a theory but it's way too late in the evening...).
