The only news I read today about Apple that for its 30th birthday they are releasing a new logo.
They just put a new power book on the market so I can't imagine they would stop production now.
So what's going to happen to the Apple computer with the Intel processor (the ones that just came out)? It would be a waste of money to discontinue them or something after they have been released. I don't own Apple products, but I hope that this is an April Fool's Day joke. 
It is an april fool gag cozzie....but many a true word is spoken in jest....i cannot imagine an intel based mac being any less mental and ancient inside than a PC...

Sounds like an April Fool to me.
As for the whole Apple vs. PC debate well I made my choice a long time ago and it was always going to be PC. They're easier and cheaper to build, get parts for, customise etc. etc. Not to mention there's a much wider software and gaming library available for them. I've also had Apple users say "Apple computers are far superior" but for what I personally want to do they're not; they're overpriced and really limited.
Steve, no offence but saying New Order use Macs means fuck all to me. Their crew use Macs for their gigs but the home user PC market is quite different I.e. most of the people who use this board. You can manipulate just as much audio with PCs as you can with Apples, all depends on the software installed.
I'm not totally against Apple mind, I think the iPods are great. I was initially skeptical but my 40gb is over 2 years old now and still going as strong as the day I got it

Don't ask me my opinion. I'm totally biased. I've been using a mac since I was in grade school. I've tried doing sound on a PC and was irritated with in 15 minutes.
I've always used PC, but only used Macs in school. I'm surprised that some industries prefer Macs since PC has a wider selection of hardware and software.
God, I wish Computer Shopper magazine is in the student store again.
Macs get (got) more horsepower per MHz, and are more stable. They are the choice of a professional in an environment where a BSOD or such like costs £000's.
You're totally right about the amount of software and games for Windows (don't forget plenty of PC's run Linux or BSD (OS-X but free)). But I've seen the two systems head to head a few times and also used macs in studios a lot (and a windows and linux pc at home). The reason NO use mac (on stage, off stage and at home) is the reason I said it was a better system.....it is a more stable platform and much more modern...PC's (and presumably intelmacs) have all sorts of 30 and 40 yr old bits inside them that slow them down (IRQ steering anyone?).
A PC running linux or BSD can match a mac for stability for sure, and Xp is amazing by MS previous standards...but really if you want a machine that you switch on, use for 40 hours running DTP or Music or Video editting and shutdown...mac it is.
Of course there are PC's with the same build quality too, Carillion for instance...but they cost mac money and are still stuck with all DOS's stupid limitations (try clicking on your adress bar in iE without your cdrom spinning, I dare you....a perfect proof of how pissy the structure of dos is)

I agree with you, it depends on what you are using it for. I do sound and video work so it's perfect for me and I never use it to play video games.
I have noticed I only crash when I use Microsoft Office..

OK, Dr. Whoever. I'm considering buying a computer soon. What's your advice, and why (*try* to offer this advice in English, btw-- geekspeak not understood here :D )? Laptop or desktop? Mac, PC or ????
Try them both and see what you like best. Mac comes with a user friendly software bundle called ilife. Its not the best software but its easy to use for the novice.
I have used both, although my last Mac was a '95 powerbook, and slow as fook, so I sold it off. Currently using Dells at school, and like them, although I've always been partial to Macs. However, Mac always comes at a premium, and I'm wondering whather I should pay the premium, or change loyalties. Mind, I think Gates is Satan incarnate, but there has to be more reason than that for a penniless student to pay a premium to Jobs.
Then there's the whole question of laptop vs. desktops, and the premium paid for laptops.
And then there's completely foreign territory like Linux...
No wonder Tabbsy sticks with shaggin' sheep... It's a confusing world out there, and sheep shaggin' is what he knows best.
Anyway, tryin' to expand my knowledge base.
i like macs. my first workplace had them. they are just so user friendly, but i haven't used one in almost 10 years now.

Well, I had to look at this twice, if only cause there was a story about the Beatles Apple Corps v. Apple Computers yesterday, which I hadn't given much thought about. Turns out the story was about ITunes using the trademarked Apple logo.

PC's are mint. Havnt used a Mac in ages nthough, to be fair. And dude, they aint going out of the computer business.

If you want to twat around, and try a million things and generally mess wth yur machine.....go PC. If you want a machine that does one or two things very well, get a mac....the question is, what do you want it for.
NEVER buy a prebuilt PC unless it's from a VERy top brand....even then...well it's like this.....
If you build your own, you will know what's in it in great deail. It is NOT hard to put one together because everything only goes in one hole (ooooerr), and more to the point you can pick bits to suit you. Also being there for the birth of your windows is a good thing....you get to stop it going whacky. Preloaded systems are like wearing someone else's shoes/knickers.
as for lappers....well....do u need it to move around? if not, you'll save a PILE of cash.....laptops are always less bang for buck.

With their recent iPod successes, Apple have moved closer and closer to MS's monopolist attitudes. They're no longer the cool fringe player but a greedy corporate machine trying to consume the rest of the market.
Case in point: if I buy a tune off Apple on iTunes, I should be able to play it wherever the fcuk I want, whenever I want, on whatever I want, as many times as I want. It's a purchase agreement, not a loan. They're charging close to retail after all. Don't they appreciate that we don't have to pay for the freakin' content. The Soulseeks, Shareazas and Azureus' will always exist for the disenchanted consumer.
Or consider how you can plug almost any known mp3 player or gadget with a USB port into the XBox360 - apart from the iPod (ie the one most people have). Apple refused to interface with it. That's gone down really well. Their elitist, protectionist attitudes are beginning to backfire.
I'm looking forward to the days of more global iPod backlash. Can't stand commonplace attitudes of "if it's not iPod, you suck." There's already a clutch of players that eat iPods for breakfast.

Well if anyone can explain why you would chose an OS that costs 10's of thousands of $$ to equip to basic standards over one that comes free, has no viri and doesn't understand the concept of crashing (wonky hardware notwithstanding), I'd love to hear it. Sure linux is hard to install, but so's Xp... in fact i'l gladly enter a race with any winluser (not using Gentoo tho..it DOES take an age to install cos of the source compiled aspect, but it's still EASIER than windows.....it just takes 2 days LOL ). Apple ARE nearly as bad as MS.....right down to stealing stuff from BSD.....most of Lose-Dos's low level components are nicked from BSD..the ftp command for instance still has the Berkley copyright they forgot to hack out of it. And OS-X is well known in the open source community as "not so free BSD". Gotta love the XFCE desktop on OSX tho.
Ms will always be worse tho, if nothing else because of their artificial maintenance of the protection racket with symantec who would go out of business if windows worked as well as linux, osx, bsd, minix(Amiga OS) Tos, sinclair basic, or even CPM (yes I KNOW CPM is 30 years old and windows is based on a 3rd rate reverse engineered hack of it called QDOS ( quick and dirty OS), later MS-DOS.).
The windows apologists should ask themselves one question.....why does no one deploy windows in failure critical environments. I happen to know of at least one case where it has killed someone.....I cannot give details tho cos it envolves my employer, a govt contract and the NHS.

My point was that installing is often seen as "harder" by people who've never install DOS-XP.
Gentoo IS hard tho, well not hard...LENGTHY, you're talking 36 hours from blank drive to multimedia desktop.

£300 for a CD, and they don't eve give you a manual (apparently there Is a windows manaul but it costs £3000!!!!!!!)

Now, suppose I, a person who merely wants a computer to download por... err, suppose I, a person who merely wants a computer for word processing, surfing the internet, and perhaps for studio duty (video, music) if I were decide to rebuild my studio someday, were to buy a computer and want Linux installed. How would I go about doing that? Would I buy a computer without an OS (remember, I'm not going to be wasting word processing time building any computers up from scratch), or would I jettison the crappy Gates OS and install Linux? And how would I go about getting Linux?

It's a little of both...it's harder to attack for two (main) reasons, firstly it's system of file and folder permissions is shit hot....you will be logged in as comrade...comrade can fuck over comrades files, but never touch anything related to the system, only root can do that (also handy for being shitfaced...you can't accidentaly delete half your system, at least not without supply a password)...so a virus you receive can only twat your own user over...also because no two linux systems are quite the same, the damage it can do is heavily limited (it doesn't know where to strike). Of course there are holes,ways to grab root access, or freak something out and bring the system down, but most of these require someone to be logged in to the system rather than via some annoying email attachment. And this brings me to the 2nd point...anyone and everyone can see the source code for every linux package...if someone spots a weakness, it's fixed the next morning...and even those who don;t apply the fix are aided because no one will bother to use the exploit.

First....I know sod all about music stuff in linux, cos I'm a cubase head, and can use nothing else on any platform with any degree of elegance....but what I do know is that it's less than optimal, in that you are in non standard territory since none of the big name programs run on linux. I know a guy who does all his work in it tho and swears by it.
It's an exceptionally good OS for "word processing" since none of the dodgy viri one finds in "word processing tutorial videos" function there, nor can webpages steal your credit card number off your hard drive and all the other wonderous things activeX enables in windows (in fairness that was patched in Xp SP1). It's a "lovely" OS for watching movies and the like, it's TV output quality and colour tone is quite beautiful (it's been a while since I had a good comparison tho because i have an ATI radeon in the windows box....oh FUCK the TV out is VILE!!!!! but it was vile on that card in linux)....in fact in general, everyone I've evern sat down at my 2 machines has said that for some reason they cannot define, the linux one always looks sort of slicker and prettier.
As for ging about getting it.....well it's free...you just download it, or order a copy from a burning service for a nominal fee. (you can also pay daft money for manuals and stuff if you like, but all the docs are on the discs anyway).
But, why bother testing it unless it's safe....so....
that's the knoppix "livecd"....you use your PC like a games console....switch off, put this in the drive and switch on, it runs entirely from the CD so you can see what all the fuss is about without doing anything too scarey. Certainly you woun't see the speed because CD's are slower than HD's and I'm not sure they have a license to distribute the full 3d accelerator drivers for things like nvidia and ati yet....but you'll get a beautiful KDE desktop, and a ton of apps to try out. Remember it does not even allow itself write access to the existsing HD, in fact it will run in a box with no HD...tho you CAN speed things up by offering it some swap space I think)
You can even install it from the live cd, but if you were considering an installation, I would look at Mandriva, a real newbie friendly distro (there are numerous distribution of linux, each put together as someone's perfect idea, and with their own quirks and ways of handling certain things), it has good software management, and lots of helpful point and drool "wizards" for those who don't like to talk to computers with text like I do. My lovely gentoo, is by far the best I have tried, but I'd be a damned liar if i said the install was for novices, or the impatient (36hours is typical...most of it spent with white text streaking up the screen). Once it's in, it just WORKS, and has done since day one, barring one or two attempts by yours truly to lobotomize it. I can't honestly remember the last time the machince crashed for any non hardware reason (fuckin video card and dvdburner hate me).
just stick a knoppix cd in the nearest PC and see what YOU think. (oh...linuc loves ram, uses lots f it, but uses it wisely.....give it plenty and it zings)

PS....antivirus for linux, is for mailservers (the ones that run the internet) to scan for windows viri...tho there are instrusion deectors for linux, I've never used one.
PPS...you can dual boot (like spotty's post about windows on a mac), have both on a hard drive and choose which at start up. The advantage of this is that you get a set up like mine with oney one machine....ie windows for games and studio, linux for everything else.....it's betetr for those other things AND by keeping them away from windows you create less chances for it to go all wibbly (EG...if you dont use it for mail, yer laughng as regards vri)

It's a little of both...it's harder to attack for two (main) reasons, firstly it's system of file and folder permissions is shit hot....you will be logged in as comrade...comrade can fuck over comrades files, but never touch anything related to the system, only root can do that (also handy for being shitfaced...you can't accidentaly delete half your system, at least not without supply a password)...so a virus you receive can only twat your own user over...also because no two linux systems are quite the same, the damage it can do is heavily limited (it doesn't know where to strike). Of course there are holes,ways to grab root access, or freak something out and bring the system down, but most of these require someone to be logged in to the system rather than via some annoying email attachment. And this brings me to the 2nd point...anyone and everyone can see the source code for every linux package...if someone spots a weakness, it's fixed the next morning...and even those who don;t apply the fix are aided because no one will bother to use the exploit.
Now, suppose I, a person who merely wants a computer to download por... err, suppose I, a person who merely wants a computer for word processing, surfing the internet, and perhaps for studio duty (video, music) if I were decide to rebuild my studio someday, were to buy a computer and want Linux installed. How would I go about doing that? Would I buy a computer without an OS (remember, I'm not going to be wasting word processing time building any computers up from scratch), or would I jettison the crappy Gates OS and install Linux? And how would I go about getting Linux?

First....I know sod all about music stuff in linux, cos I'm a cubase head, and can use nothing else on any platform with any degree of elegance....but what I do know is that it's less than optimal, in that you are in non standard territory since none of the big name programs run on linux. I know a guy who does all his work in it tho and swears by it. It's an exceptionally good OS for "word processing"
As for ging about getting it.....well it's free...you just download it, or order a copy from a burning service for a nominal fee. (you can also pay daft money for manuals and stuff if you like, but all the docs are on the discs anyway).
But, why bother testing it unless it's safe....so....
that's the knoppix "livecd"....you use your PC like a games console....switch off, put this in the drive and switch on, it runs entirely from the CD so you can see what all the fuss is about without doing anything too scarey. Certainly you woun't see the speed because CD's are slower than HD's and I'm not sure they have a license to distribute the full 3d accelerator drivers for things like nvidia and ati yet....but you'll get a beautiful KDE desktop, and a ton of apps to try out. Remember it does not even allow itself write access to the existsing HD, in fact it will run in a box with no HD...tho you CAN speed things up by offering it some swap space I think)
You can even install it from the live cd, but if you were considering an installation, I would look at Mandriva, a real newbie friendly distro (there are numerous distribution of linux, each put together as someone's perfect idea, and with their own quirks and ways of handling certain things), it has good software management, and lots of helpful point and drool "wizards" for those who don't like to talk to computers with text like I do. My lovely gentoo, is by far the best I have tried, but I'd be a damned liar if i said the install was for novices, or the impatient (36hours is typical...most of it spent with white text streaking up the screen). Once it's in, it just WORKS, and has done since day one, barring one or two attempts by yours truly to lobotomize it. I can't honestly remember the last time the machince crashed for any non hardware reason (fuckin video card and dvdburner hate me).
just stick a knoppix cd in the nearest PC and see what YOU think. (oh...linuc loves ram, uses lots f it, but uses it wisely.....give it plenty and it zings)
So how's it work for word processing? :D
