  1. Secret Agent Man, by Johnny Rivers, later covered incomparably by the incomparable Devo.

  2. Mission Impossible, by the legendary Lalo Schifrin.

  3. Hawaii Five-O, later covered by The Ventures, and still later by Oz punk band Radio Birdman as Aloha Steve and Danno.

  4. The Saint

and the top TV theme song of all time is….

  1. Dr. Who

peter gunn. how can you forget peter gunn?

ooh, and cheers. the best comedy theme song.

also, the greatest american hero. i like it as a song, not just as a theme song.

secret asian man is a good one, as well. but i think mission impossible is probably the best of them all.

which is the same reason we all loved james bond--until he became all 'almost monogamous.'

the jeffersons was pretty funky, as was sanford & son. one day at a time was another '70s classic TV tune.

Crockette's Theme springs to mind.

As does the new title theme to the third series of Hustle. A classy show, so long as you don't mind a minefield of fabrications.

It's a pity that many of the great TV themes were never extended into worthwhile tracks for sale. I could probably think of many more.

Dr Who (Deliah Derbyshire BBCRW fully electronic version...other versions are Ok, but false)....then a gap of several hundred thousand mightines points to... the Prisoner (same guy and all....he also did tales of the unexpected and panorama)

Joe 90/thunderbirds/stingray,space 1999/UFO...ever tune Barry Gray did for Anderson/AFP

BBC F1 theme (The Chain)

Also rediscovered how good the Tomorrow people theme is.

Blake's 7

Old Top gear.

MAKING OUT (did anyone else mention that?)

Soundtrack music was always more my thing than pop, so I am sure to think of a few more....Oh...the krypton factor theme,....the Art of Noise one.

Not strictly a TV theme tune but Colourbox's 'Unofficial theme tune' for the 86 world cup was a corker. Had it on 12". Now just have it on mp3.

Totally misunderstood. I thought "theme" as in the basis of of an idea. Like Twilight zone starting the individual scifi stories with moral meanings. If it's the theme SONG than that's completely different. I'd say Greatest American Hero, Cops (though it is way played out), and Perry Mason.

That sounds kind of like Battlestar Galatica. I LOVED that as a kid, couldn't miss it, or get enough of it. Watched an episode five years ago. . .holy crap! It is completely horrible, I think Full House might be better. . .and I HATE Full House! Guess I'll keep the memories of GAH in my mind then, thanks for the heads up.

Are you saying that because they were good, or because there were half clad little hotties running all over the place?

It's an adult show. The characters are complex, not one-dimensional. The themes (in the episode I saw) dealt with love, trust, betrayal, regret, guilt. (Some of) the cylons struggle with their missions. The humans are involved in a life-and-death struggle, and sometimes must make morally questionable decisions.

I've only seen 1.5 episodes, but I'd definitely watch more. Not at all about the hotties. Check it out. I'll bet you like it. The grown-up version of the show you loved so much.

I'll try it out. Seems to be less and less watchable stuff on the tv anymore. Sitcoms are so cookiecutter, reality shows annoy the crap out of me, and if i have to watch anymore HGTV (my wife's fav channel), I'm going to scream. Might be a good change of pace.
