I **DON"T** like the Doors. But I used to listen to alot of their music. The best album is LA Woman.
Good songs: Love Her Madly, Hyacinth House, LA Woman, Riders in the Storm, L'America, Break On Thru.
I think their best concert LP would be Live At The Hollywood Bowl (1987).

i prefer the word soul. and curtis mayfield is funk, as is isaac hayes (i've got an isaac hayes record collection, as well). emmylou is country/bluegrass.

the sugarhill gang were actually a 'boy band' put together by a '60s singer (forget her name now). grandmaster flash and the furious five. now that's where it's at.
Are you incinuating that it's a bad sign? Well the Sex Pistols and Spice Girls were also "gathered" but they shook the world.

not sure if the spice girls 'shook the world,' per se. but grandmaster flash was probably more influential than the sugarhill gang in the long run, as was afrikaa bambaataa, even though 'rapper's delight' was the first mainstream rap record.

red hot chili peppers for sure. disappointed at liam's lack of knowledge on higher ground

Thought of Metallica, but its unlikely anyone else here would like them. Its nothing like the same kind of stuff. Bloc Party though

Trust me, I've told college hippie wannabes to fuck off Front 242 is staying on the stereo and the Doors are remaining in his pocket. But Jim and Co have at least two live lps (I think just one live cd) that are definitive of their music without the pretencious bullshit. Absolutely Live (blue cover double vinyl) and Alive She Cried. All the fookin' Doors anyone needs and rockin' bastards with good banter. With the advent of compact discs both lps were re-released with the title "In Concert."
To add to some of the recommendations (but not all of them...Pearl Jam? Are you kidding me? :p ):
Gram Parsons (really more for the country-rock he perfected with the Byrds and the Flying Burrito Brothers, his solo stuff is a bit too hardcore for me)
Belle and Sebastian (fantastic Scottish pop band that has grown from purely acoustic wistfulness to ballsy rock on their last two LPs. Check out both versions for greater appreciation)
Death Cab for Cutie (based solely on their new "major-label" debut, which is currently in residence in my car stereo)
Old 97s (I only have one album of theirs, "Satellite Rides" from '01. But it's absolutely one of my favorite country-rock albums)
Otis Redding (not just the guy who Duckie mimed to in "Pretty in Pink". Definitely one of the great gritty soul singers)
The Modern Lovers (if you want to see where punk actually began, pick up their one proper studio album in the original incarnation)
The Byrds (not just for the Parsons stuff, but some classic Sixties American pop)
And if you don't have anything by Bob Dylan at this point...what is wrong with you?

I've got the Cure's greatest hits, some nice songs but not enough to make me go and get their albums.
Yeah that sums up the Cure. First few lps good then others are hit and miss or have only a few good tunes and some shit. Once again I defer to the live lp concept. Cure live is 100K better than studio, especially Distintegration. Get Entreat instead of Distintegration. But Three Imaginary Boys and Seventeen Seconds are essential Cure studio lp. The latter being a great chill out cd.
