Just wondering, cos I seem to kee hearing obviously intelligent people referring to themselves as thick when talking about their computers.....and treating me like "bicycle repair man" as a result LOL.

(please note that Bicycle repairman is a referrence to python and not some sort of suggestion that I'm pissed off with being free tech support for half of NOOL, most of my work colleagues, my mates, random fuckers on the interent and tribes up the amazon who've never seen a white (well pale blue) man before. My gift is my curse :D )

Wino, you pillock I know exactly how you voted, and you are SO wrong.

Oh twatto while yer at it....tell me how to get my dvd to be a region again cos it's sulking and windows changer dropdown just smiles, says it did it, and dos fuck all.

I've never found a problem on mine either........that if I couldn't fix.........well, Steve couldn't fix....pretty much the same thing!!!! Bear in mind my knowledge of the inner workings came with dos programming when I was 15 - which was a fair while ago, not that long, but a fair while........

Hey, im not good at fixing things, i make sure they dont go wrong. My dad messes up usually, but he only has restricted powers within the computer anyway :evil4:

Saying that, if i was actually put in front of the thing id probably be able to have a crack at it, but couldnt even tell you where to begin from what you just said

See there's a thing...you probably don;t relate windows to old boring DOS....but all the buttons and shiney things are just the big curtain that the old guy sits behind in the wizard of Oz.....it's still DOS. I don;t call it DOS XP out of (only) bitterness and hatred....it's what it is.

Example. the folder C:\program files you think....that's not a DOS name, it's too long and has spaces...you are riht...because that is not the folder's name, it's a tag in it's header.....the folder is ACTUALLY called....

C:\progra~1

all done with smoke and mirros to throw the blame for it's ineptitude onto unsuspecting users.

Trust me...I been using the force to fic gadgets since I was extremely wee....and there are some thig in windows you just have to cope with LOL.

Like...I dare you to get it to stop making a floppy drive go "pukka pukka pukka" eerytime you do ANYTHING...without taking the drive out OR disconnecting it in the device manager.

linux on the other hand, well, anything IS fixable in it....it's just a question of whether you need to get dick deep in 15meg of C++ or not :D

When something goes wrong with the computer, I consult the manual or use another computer to go to the Internet to find what I need. One time, I had a massive spyware problem and went into the Registry Editor. I know what I'm doing, so there's no way I should be stupid.

we's only kidding Cozzie......but males rarely go NEAR manuals.

I've never read the manual for Cubase ( I read A manual for it on the atari in 1992), except to find out the odd bit of very obscure info, or to....as you said....learn key commands.....mice are SO inefficient.

YOu forgot - throwing the offending piece of crap against the wall ina fit of rage, droping remenants into skip, retrieving from skip later that day, more rage when its irreparable, finally investing in the newer model at ENORMOUS cost, therapy, and THEN POSSIBLY RTFM:banghead:

BTW, funny you should mention Bicycle repair men & computers . . . friend of mine - also called Steve, funnilly enough (also he owned a house in Bangor for a couple of years!) emigrated to Deutschland about 18 years ago & soon became a BYCYCLE REPAIR MAN - for, like 14 years, or something. Never used computers, never wanted to, until a few years ago, he decided that was where the money was - bulshitted himself into a well paid project managers job in a web design co for a year or so. Now him & the wife run their own rediculously sucessfull 'digital design' co, iomas media. Just thought you should know

Yeah, years ago a lot of products (e.g. Windows, DOS, Office, Borland C++, etc) used to come with LOADS of manuals - so many that you'd need to take up weightlifting to try and pick the damn things up... :)

With the advent of CD's, these books were then put onto CD and you "used" to be able to then send off for the printed versions from the manufacturer...

Then they couldn't be bothered, and decided that a neat way of making more money was to publish the manuals as books that you could buy in the shops...

And, thus, another excuse for making money was born... :)

Yeah...have you seen how much it would cost for a complete set of windows docs?

it's into the £000's

part of why I love linux, everything I need to know is at my fingertips if only I can be arsed to look (after kicking the computer, formatting it, that kind of thing). Actually, I'm fairly sure it fixed ITSELF 3 days ago cos it could't stand the sight of me stressing (DVD burner insisting on burning at 8x when the discs were flakey at that speed, it just STOPPED and dropped to 4x, no help from me)

Actually we can thank Webster for the US spelling and dialect.

When the US broke away from Britian, Webster believed to build nation pride, our own dilect was needed. He wanted to seperate US spelling and is the one who first spelled "color", "gray", "center" and many other words. He was also the first to put in the phoenetic sounding that dictionaries have, because he thought the nation would stand apart if everyone spoke in one way. His idea of the dictionary has been out sold by only one other book, the Bible.

I.e: Colour, not color Centre, not center Foetus, not fetus.

There are more...

Edit: This isnt a dig at Americans on this site, i've never noticed anyone spelling in the fabled 'US English' on here.
