My parents got all of my old Matchbox cars out for LITTLEINOIL to play with at the weekend. They're all RUINED - I've smashed all the windows, scratched the paint off, removed doors and roofs. Wanton destruction all round. Don't seem to have pulled any wheels off though.

All my brother's Star Wars hand me downs.
I was also pretty keen on electronics. I could sit in my room all day playing with an old dead calculator or radio or whatever. I loved taking stuff apart and trying to put it back together or even just amassing large amounts of "push buttons" and pretened they blew up stuff around the world.
I also had a little synth to eek out songs on, and a drum set I never quite got the hang of, and my Dad's guitar. Which I broke. Because I tried to play it like a violin. Which is why they paid for me to have violin lessons and not break their adult stuff again.

It's probably for the best we was separated by an ocean, though, for the well being of everyone else around us.
The other "toy" I had was on the weekends when Dad would work on his car - I'd get to sit quietly and hand him tools and get greasy with axle slop and in general get out of doing cleaning by having father daughter hangout time. Ahhh, I loved whirling the ratchets around, especially. Made such great noise. Even better as a sample, so when I'd fart around on the synth later on, it'd be pre-saved and made all sorts of nasty fart-like sounds in the right octaves.
Come to think of it, for a good year after I got that thing, the sampler on it was exclusively used to make rude noises - due to my room being across the hall from the bathroom.
There's not a domestic sampler in existence that wasn't used for burps and farts. I had a casio sk10, that had this auto repeat function....you put it in the corner of the room and as soon as anything hit the trigger level, it played a merry tune with a little grab of it. Deeply hilarious when unleashed on a room full of wasted people, especially since after it's first appearance all it ever gets to work with is stoned giggles. OK I was 25 but it was still a toy. The hifi was my fave toy...I used to plug mics into it and play the feedback ( which I'm still known to do, only with FX units not mics....for instance the odd Dr who noise right at the start of the cozzietune), I'm fairly sure I also deduced, but forgot for many years, the nature of sound on sound recording, by taping up the erase head in the cassette deck. Spent a lot of time audio taping TV shows cos VHS was still a myth here in bog Ireland.
Oh...I also used to play with my grannies sewing machine...a huge iron singer with a foot treadle....it made noises and motions FAR to simmillar to a steam loco not to be appealing. I can't believe I can play a bass after the number of times I squished my fingers in that thing.

We'd just gotten our first VCR around the time I got that grotty synth, and I wasn't allowed to operate it so I would sit down and audio tape the shows.. little me thinking that I'd get the same enjoyment from Thundercats or Saturday Night Live or whatever at a later date with.. a cassette recording.
Nothing beats replaying those tapes and hearing radnom stuff like my brother talking over the intro, or a fart, or Mom calling us to dinner.. I dunno.. treasures the lot of them ... doomed to be used for malicious intent on some bad album in the future if I have my way. 
I never grew out of that sound of a half heard TV show. SNSS always had a walkman on stage full of tvshows or movies to just fade in and out at random moments.
Mind you if it wasn't for people like us, many an episode of the Dr would be gone forever...lots of them have been put back together with production stills and off air audio tapes.
BTW.... never seen lite brite before...but I did spend a hell of a lot of time seeing just how many batteries it took to make an LED finally give up......impressive too....they get as bright as welding arcs before they pop.

speaking of toys, i just got a turntable and a usb preamp, so i can pulg it into a computer and transfer my vinyl, but so far i have not had much success. i can't even hear the record over the computer yet, but i will struggle on tomorrow. any tips there cambo.

You can't hear it at all or you cannot hear it over the noise of the fans?
it IS an RIAA preamp isn't it?
If it's using it's own bizarre software, stop it, see if it appears in the windows multimedia control panel as an input device, set it as the default input device and record with the windows sound recorded (they still bundle that little shitepile for your 300 quid?), or something good like audacity.
