you've been known to post some huge totals in your time as well.

It's not so black and white now is it.... I mean there are people here with many thousands of worthwhile posts, then twats like me who have 50% worthy and 50% UTTER shite (debate the figures if you feel you must ;) ), but there are also those who have n000 posts of little or no value, purely because they are chasing a post count.

I've seen a few fora with a can't post for 5 mins after posting thing...might be a plan here? tho it would doubtles depress MICK and MIKE. :D

well i have never resorted to quoting myself, or had my threads removed. i think i am fairly harmless,as most of us are. this is BCD and just about anything goes. if you don't like it, then you know what you can do, and i'm not implying anything rude here.

What about acting as everyones internet surfer? Just copying and pasting links that most people will have seen anyway. And then quoting yourself and adding your opinion!

Drop the counts, watch the wankers fuck off.

Why does anyone give a toss about the counts anyway? The more counts the more you need to get a life!! :\ohwell:

Here's what I would do. Keep the post counts for display on an individual's profile (which others could only see if the member had chosen to make their profile visible), but remove them from the public display alongside the poster's name etc.

Post counts have caused quite a few problems over the years, but now we have a few prats deliberately trying to inflate their totals by persistantly posting mindless shite (you are lucky I ain't the site owner, you'd have been binned by now), the suggestion above makes most sense. Those who are proud of their totals can either sit in a lonely place and wank over how many posts they have managed, or can just choose to make their profile available to others by selecting the relevant option. Those who don't care needn't bother.

Delete my POST, CUNT!

Get rid of the login count first. That doesn't even make sense. Mine, at last count, said 12k or something which, in 4 years, means I've logged in here 10 times a day or something. Which ain't quite true, I just work in browsers all day long and constantly switch between them which inflates my login count artificially. Technically, I'm permanently logged in at work, I don't choose to log in/out all the time.

It's a tricky one this...

If we want NOOL to survive we need people to come visit and post on it; post count 'reward' titles motivate visitors.

I may have a warped logic here, but the way I see it, NOOL's survival helps NO's survival in some small way as well; the band know that the fans are active and passionate... and if they wanted to, they can see what we're thinking....

A lot of Kerrrrrap! gets posted- the only way to avert this is to kill, or limit access to Behind Closed Doors... but that would also damage the community...

Best thing may be for us to all ignore what we don't like...

I used to just come here to read the news; I never thought I would be approaching 2K's worth of posts, but posting on NOOL is a good bit of fun when you've nothing better to do... I just don't know how you would limit the crap-

Maybe thread creation should be moderator controlled; i.e. you can't put up a new thread until a moderator has pre-approved it; but would the moderator's be up for that kind of increase in workload?

yup, my Opera opens NOOL among others when it's run, and stays running for how ever many weeks the machine stays booted for.

No offence, but I think this is an awful idea. I certainly wouldn't post here anymore if I had to go cap in hand to someone to get what I wanted to post cleared first.

Well... we debated this over the years did we?

But Tim, to be honest.. this forum was created so all the crap can go here instead of the main forum, so that was the idea

But even the biggest crap poster then (Shug not to name him) resigned moderating this forum.

Many people used this forum as an alternative for instant messaging, as long as it's still on topic and not disruptive... I don't really mind. But it also means less people will read them. I barely read 1 of 20 threads on here.

And seriously, does the post count have really any value? I'm seriously not proud of mine and wish it would be 10 times lower than it is

Aye, no amount of wank I see posted here raises more than a momentary "FFS" and fear for the bugger responsible.Nothing other than people being personally nasty to each other and meaning it really registers on me at all. I made myself deeply unpopular here by being too gobby, so I quitened down a bit, dunno how much good it did, but I aint out to make enemies in life ;)

I find it a little hard to see how any amount of shite is bad in THIS forum, because it is the "backroom bar" if you will, Ceremony and DR should be bullshit free by and large.

Anyway I think OldMonkey's idea of removing post counts from the posts themselves would be a good idea because it would remove tem as a bragging pice but still allow secret gloating, for those who like that sort of thing.

I wouldn't like this either... just brainstorming an extreme conclusion...

I think things are fine the way they are all round- This is a cracking website and if people think a thread is rubbish; just ignore it- it's only a bit of fun!

Too many fcukin fruitcakes wanting to to talk politics and religion (threads which were always going to end in personal attacks and insults - even if the original post was harmless). I don't mind some of the messenger type threads if they are amusing and others get involved, but that doesnae happen very often. Patrick & Huntsman were the masters for those type of threads

Well, I'm using the occasion of my 9,000th post to say...I need to get out more :faint:

But seriously, the idea of getting rid of posts counts is good in theory (like Communism), but it won't work. As much as there are certain people here who are only here to up their post counts, there are others who like to talk to folks across the world and see how much time they could've put to better use. When you've got an international forum where freedom of speech (to an extent, so long as you're not a dick to everyone around you) is a given, you're going to have people abuse it.

I remember when I first started here, I'd keep tabs of my post count and mark each new landmark ("100 posts! Yeah") with some lame-ass comment on how much I felt like I'd "done" something because I had 2,000 posts, 3,000 posts, etc. I compared it to kill counts that WWII aces accumulated (yes I am that lame)...but then when you get into the 6,000th time you've had your sexuality questioned because you bring up David Hasselhoff in every posts, you start to see that you might have a problem. :uhoh:

Would it be a deterrant to all the shite talk here? For a little while, yeah. But then there'd be some other measure for how much crap you can post here. So...I guess I'm on the side of "might work for a while, but doubt it's permenant"

I hope I've spent my 9,000th post well :nervous:

Wait what? You'd rather have garbage "Hi How are you" and "check your email threads" than debate? That seems crazy. Debate about politics religion sports etc is all part of the internet...sadly enough.

It's certainly the signal in the low signal to noise ratio in this forum.

I'm about 6 posts away from not posting anymore... But yeah.. post count is important to the people who are "trashing" the forum.

When it's people complaining about being off topic versus people being off topic I 99% of the time side with the latter, especially in an off topic forum.

But now that I understand that what, for the most part, people are complaining about are the conversation threads, I have to agree.

Links from the internet, political, religious, and sports discussions, posts for advice, sharing events in your life, etc etc.. that's what an off topic forum is about. Not "check your email" and other conversations

Surely there's no-one here though who could possibly gloat about a postcount?! Speak up if there is. Only thing with postcounts is that it does suggest some sort of longevity. And I've certainly seen, say, Mike change his name before, or Jeff, and thought 'oh, a new poster' then clocked their count and realised it's just a name change. Er, which I've also just done.

Personally, I couldn't give a toss whether the post count stays or goes... and the same goes for Behind Closed Doors to be honest! Occasionally there are some decent threads here but they're few and far between these days.

I think we all have our little group of NOOL mates we've made over the years and I bet we all chat to them regularly enough via IM or e-mail. I just don't see the point of clogging up the board with pointless FAO messages nobody gives a shit about or using the board as a slow IM chat.

Also, certain thread topics have been run into the ground lately... I log onto BCD each day and there's fifteen new Pearl Jam threads (Jack's a good lad I'm sure, but he's overdoing it and it's just tedious now) or Garden Shed threads which I definitely missed the in-joke on.

Don't envy Tim or Jeff their jobs of moderating (seems a dirty word these days so I'll say "looking after") the forum as yer all

Woah there, that was back in the bad old days, but in case you hadn't realised i do like to take the piss quite a lot. I'm very rarely a top poster these days. Too busy. I couldn't give a fuck if anybody could see my count anyway. If i was bothered i'd be on the computer at night as well!:baby:

I can sympathize with the folks who seem to get a thrill out of seeing their post counts climb, but I'm well past the point where I choose to make a big deal of it :D

Say, did I mention that I just hit 9,000? :evil4:

Anyway, it's easy to get carried away when you're first getting into the "groove" of NOOL (or any message board, for that matter). It's a bit like the Algonquin Round Table of internet bickering and kvetching, if anyone today knew what the hell the Algonquin Round Table was :p

But once you go through the "trial by fire" of being the guy/gal that everyone loves to hate, if you stick around you find that this is a community of people who might not always say it, but generally care about you. They might not always like you, but they'll acknowledge your existence as a worthy contributor if you bring something to the table. If you're just going on about whatever bowel movement you had today, you'll get run out pretty quickly :spit:

As evidenced by my tenure, I've been around long enough to know that there are "slow periods" on this site, and certain people who are currently annoyances just happened to get on a streak at times like now when there's not a whole lot going on. It's thawing out from winter for most folks, and looking forward to summer (when it's too hot to go outside and you might as well shoot bollocks on the net all day). Once you get that initial "ohmigod, I really have something to say!" stage, you become a better person for it.

Or you become a drunk :beer2:

So let's all take a breather from "Mrs. Cozzie and the Vicious Circle" and remember that in the real world, world leaders are misleading us into wars that aren't justified, celebrities are forcing their bullshit religious ideas on us, and *someone* closed my thread about Wacko Jacko yesterday. Compared to all that...this is really just so much sound and fury

Did I mention that I now have 9001 posts? :nonono:

The whole point of this forum was for us lot having a laugh though Missy - that why we hark back to the old days

And RE:Chrissi....As moderator I had to read most of the stuff that were in them threads, I have no problem with a proper debate if everyone is sensible and behaves, but on subjects like Politics and Religion it didnae take long for people to spit the dummy and resort to insults and name calling. So yeah, I'd like to see this place go back to the way it used to be. People having a craic! There are several people on here who I choose to ignore - yourself included - I am sure there are several who choose this option with my posts, it's nae skin off my nose.

But I will say that I at least feel part of this community - you will find me at most gigs, and you will also see the stories and pictures on here as well, and I've had the pleasure of meeting up with onliners from all over the world.

It seems to me that quite a few of the people who post mainly on here have rarely mentioned the Order, and yet it's a neworder site.

Post counts should still be used. Aside from measuring achievement from going to the next level, it gives me a measure of safety of who my audience is. In other words, it's better than myspace or chat because it's safer.

NO has changed my life. What started me to be a NO fan from a Nirvana fan was the purchase of International in Oct. 2005, shortly after my college life began. Before then, I knew that the group came with "Blue Monday" first before Orgy. I was stunned by the lyrics, profound and ambiguous. Also, I downloaded Joy Division's LWTUA from the Donnie Darko Soundtrack. According to a fact on the Real Player, NO was derived from JD. So the group who did BM also did JD, Sweet...

Anyway, there a many things I like about NO. Their lyrics have double meanings most of the time. It's the only group that I don't mind listening to long songs. They give a technological and human faces to rock.

NO is the model for any modern band. Etc.

Changed your life? I dont think i've ever heard anything quite so pretentious! And it was International? Bloody Hell.

it's quite simple. Ignore what you want. People's nonsense doesn't bother me unless its not properly titled. If you must have a tesco thread properly put it in the thread title. I find 90% of threads follow this.

Politics, sports, and bullshit are part of everyday conversation. Why should BCR be any different? ISn't that purpose of this forum?

About International, Liam: I got it from a used record store in Chapel Hill. International was a starter. Then when I went to other record stores in college, that's was when I started building my JD/NO collection. Except for Movement, I got the rest of their albums with. Also got CD's for JD, Electronic, compilations such as Substance. DVDs include New Order Story, Collection, 316, 511, and 24 HPP.

I'm really not bothered about post counts, but I don't think people should be censured for posting on BCD just because some people don't find the posts amusing or relevant... I've deliberately tried to avoid lots of posting recently because I don't want to be lumped in with the 'Pariahs'... I'd like to get to know people, be a part of this, but because I'm relatively new, I don't want to step on anyone who's been here longer's toes...

I've deliberately tried to avoid lots of posting recently because I don't want to be lumped in with the 'Pariahs'... I'd like to get to know people, be a part of this, but because I'm relatively new, I don't want to step on anyone who's been here longer's toes...

Thank you for your time,

90% of the time it should be easy to ignore anything in BCD that doesn't interest you.

Three interesting points:

You meet NOOL mates by turning up to gigs and certain other events. There's usually fair warning and everyone knows where, when and sometime has access to phone numbers in case they get lost.

90% of the time it SHOULD BE easy to ignore things that are of no interest to you, but recently it has not been. Any thread that may interest you is normally on page 2, having been pushed there by all the identical threads that don't interest you at all.

Even threads that are of interest or entertainment lose their sheen after the sixtieth one in the same day.

It's nice to hear someone say that they don't want to step on anyone's toes - most new people on here seem to want to step on them as hard as they can.

Maybe Shug's critisism in starting this thread should not be taken as an insult, but a reminder that there are others on here who feel pushed out by the dominance of a few.

It's pissing me off as much as anyone else, as Shug knows very well. I don't want to get involved in a slanging match, just want everyone to post with a little more consideration.

Please?

But how do you meet NOOL mates? The main reason I started posting was beacuse, believe it or not, having lurked for a while, I wanted to get involved with the community and get to know some people who shared not just a love of NO, but in many other cases, interests in sport, humour, etc. Things change, and I'm sure back in the old days you did have to post a lot (but over a longer time) to get to know people and established, and I'm sure a lot of that talk was about NO, but that shouldn't mean that it becomes a closed shop and noone else can get involved - with BCD it makes it easier to post a lot in a shorter space of time, than if everything had to be NO-related... Is it bad because it's different or bad because it's bad? I ignore anything about films, formula 1, a lot of politics stuff, but I am interested in what people are listening to, silly threads (that are clearly labelled) when I've got time to spare and above all NO when I have something to say, which right now is obviously not that often...

Snorri, you said it all.... I've made some really good friends on Nool and there is a real community here despite the efforts of some real miserable gits to be found on a couple of the other threads right now!

But you've still got FA chance in the FA Cup :evil4:

remove the "top" posters in the last 24 hours. it's not a contest. invariably they are not top posts.

EDIT - I mean remove the section of the website that lists the "top" posters of the last 24 hours, i am not advocating their extinction.

what an exciting game last night, that late strike from Forsell really spiced up the relegation battle and Birminghams win against Blackburn has kept them in the race for survival!

And Liam, I've said it before, yer a cunt.

I agree Missy. I find the forum is good for stress relief as I hate my job at the moment, and this gives me a bit of a different outlet. Also, I don't have many other people to talk to who are interested in NO and I am able to find out info about NO here that I wouldn't necessarily hear about otherwise.

I think it will be removed in the next release, that and the fact that the last topics will only be about the "on-topic" forums.

That's a great idea. I bet it's occasionally quite daunting to get to the first page and see some of the BCD thread titles.

The first page is, amongst other things, an advert to newcomers to the site!

Lose the number of posts next to each message posted, but keep the post ranks there, as a bit of a compromise - that way people who really care can see roughly how many messages someone has posted and feel proud of their rank, without it being so explicit as to exactly how many messages have been posted... Lose the Top Posters thing as well, but above all realise that if you're relatively new to NOOL (like me) you can't just come in and hijack everything, repesct those who have been here longer, but also for those who have been here a while, realise that things do change - some of the "in the good old days" comments sound like grandparents comlaining about their grandchildren's taste in music or clothes, etc. - just because things were different in the beginning doesn't mean they should stay like that - maybe 1000 posts was a real achievement once upon a time, now it's not - some people seem to covertly really care about newbies posting lots, because it belittles their own post count?

Keep the forum, keep the post counts.

Bar access to BCD for those with under 500 posts If quality control is what people are bothered about and NOOL can survive a drop in activity.

Quite the reverse, I'd have thought. How many times have we seen someone come in here and accuse the big-time posters (myself included) of 'not having a life' because of their post counts?

And I'm never one to back down when someone airs a comment like that.

Fair enough, guys, it was just a thought - I was trying to imaine what I'd feel like if I had been here since the start only to be confronted by the current situation - maybe I secretly care about post-counts more than I think... I wasn't suggesting that that was the case with everyone, but maybe for some part of the whole - "it was better in the old days" thing, sort of "I earned my post-count the hard way, these youngsters don't know they're born"! EDIT: Never thought of it like that before, Al, probably because I would never dream of doing so - I think seeing how much time needs to be spent on here even to post 1000 meassges of shite, I respect anyone who has a high post count - I do think some newbies are a little inconsiderate in how they treat the fora...

Probably is way off the mark... Back to the shed for a bacon sandwich...

Misinterpreted then, in no way was I being harsh, just stating the facts about why this forum was put here in the first place, any falling out however big or small we had must've ben cleared up cos I can't even remember it mate.....but that should come as no surprise, I am not famous for having a good memory :thumb: When I was moderator I had to email a few people regarding certain issues and it always got cleared up - I don't think I issued any warnings (well, maybe once to Garrity :D )

As for calling Liam a cunt, Liam's a pal and a big boy and he knows it's always said in jest......well, most of the time :evil4:

I have opened a BCD Official SILLY Thread, hope that is allowed. One thread for all the silly stuff.

It really is easy, people who wanna post daft stuff on one thread ONLY can, and people who wanna avoid Daft stuff know where it is and have nothing to complain about.
