But seriously, the idea of getting rid of posts counts is good in theory (like Communism), but it won't work. As much as there are certain people here who are only here to up their post counts, there are others who like to talk to folks across the world and see how much time they could've put to better use. When you've got an international forum where freedom of speech (to an extent, so long as you're not a dick to everyone around you) is a given, you're going to have people abuse it.

I remember when I first started here, I'd keep tabs of my post count and mark each new landmark ("100 posts! Yeah") with some lame-ass comment on how much I felt like I'd "done" something because I had 2,000 posts, 3,000 posts, etc. I compared it to kill counts that WWII aces accumulated (yes I am that lame)...but then when you get into the 6,000th time you've had your sexuality questioned because you bring up David Hasselhoff in every posts, you start to see that you might have a problem.

Would it be a deterrant to all the shite talk here? For a little while, yeah. But then there'd be some other measure for how much crap you can post here. So...I guess I'm on the side of "might work for a while, but doubt it's permenant"

Too many fcukin fruitcakes wanting to to talk politics and religion (threads which were always going to end in personal attacks and insults - even if the original post was harmless). I don't mind some of the messenger type threads if they are amusing and others get involved, but that doesnae happen very often. Patrick & Huntsman were the masters for those type of threads

I still drop by here, but it's far less frequent these days.

Wait what? You'd rather have garbage "Hi How are you" and "check your email threads" than debate? That seems crazy. Debate about politics religion sports etc is all part of the internet...sadly enough.

Many people used this forum as an alternative for instant messaging, as long as it's still on topic and not disruptive... I don't really mind. But it also means less people will read them. I barely read 1 of 20 threads on here.

And seriously, does the post count have really any value? I'm seriously not proud of mine and wish it would be 10 times lower than it is

I'm about 6 posts away from not posting anymore... But yeah.. post count is important to the people who are "trashing" the forum.

When it's people complaining about being off topic versus people being off topic I 99% of the time side with the latter, especially in an off topic forum.

But now that I understand that what, for the most part, people are complaining about are the conversation threads, I have to agree.

Links from the internet, political, religious, and sports discussions, posts for advice, sharing events in your life, etc etc.. that's what an off topic forum is about. Not "check your email" and other conversations

Woah there, that was back in the bad old days, but in case you hadn't realised i do like to take the piss quite a lot. I'm very rarely a top poster these days. Too busy. I couldn't give a fuck if anybody could see my count anyway. If i was bothered i'd be on the computer at night as well!

I can sympathize with the folks who seem to get a thrill out of seeing their post counts climb, but I'm well past the point where I choose to make a big deal of it :D

Anyway, it's easy to get carried away when you're first getting into the "groove" of NOOL (or any message board, for that matter). It's a bit like the Algonquin Round Table of internet bickering and kvetching, if anyone today knew what the hell the Algonquin Round Table was :p

But once you go through the "trial by fire" of being the guy/gal that everyone loves to hate, if you stick around you find that this is a community of people who might not always say it, but generally care about you. They might not always like you, but they'll acknowledge your existence as a worthy contributor if you bring something to the table. If you're just going on about whatever bowel movement you had today, you'll get run out pretty quickly

As evidenced by my tenure, I've been around long enough to know that there are "slow periods" on this site, and certain people who are currently annoyances just happened to get on a streak at times like now when there's not a whole lot going on. It's thawing out from winter for most folks, and looking forward to summer (when it's too hot to go outside and you might as well shoot bollocks on the net all day). Once you get that initial "ohmigod, I really have something to say!" stage, you become a better person for it.

Post counts should still be used. Aside from measuring achievement from going to the next level, it gives me a measure of safety of who my audience is. In other words, it's better than myspace or chat because it's safer.

My comment was actually aimed at Chrissmari for dragging my name into it. My reason for using this forum is just for having a laugh to break the monotony of my day up. I think real reason nobody mentions NO on here much is because there's a few other forums for NO stuff.

NO has changed my life. What started me to be a NO fan from a Nirvana fan was the purchase of International in Oct. 2005, shortly after my college life began. Before then, I knew that the group came with "Blue Monday" first before Orgy. I was stunned by the lyrics, profound and ambiguous. Also, I downloaded Joy Division's LWTUA from the Donnie Darko Soundtrack. According to a fact on the Real Player, NO was derived from JD. So the group who did BM also did JD, Sweet...

it's quite simple. Ignore what you want. People's nonsense doesn't bother me unless its not properly titled. If you must have a tesco thread properly put it in the thread title. I find 90% of threads follow this.

Politics, sports, and bullshit are part of everyday conversation. Why should BCR be any different? ISn't that purpose of this forum?

About International, Liam: I got it from a used record store in Chapel Hill. International was a starter. Then when I went to other record stores in college, that's was when I started building my JD/NO collection. Except for Movement, I got the rest of their albums with. Also got CD's for JD, Electronic, compilations such as Substance. DVDs include New Order Story, Collection, 316, 511, and 24 HPP.

The main reason I started posting was beacuse, believe it or not, having lurked for a while, I wanted to get involved with the community and get to know some people who shared not just a love of NO, but in many other cases, interests in sport, humour, etc. Things change, and I'm sure back in the old days you did have to post a lot (but over a longer time) to get to know people and established, and I'm sure a lot of that talk was about NO, but that shouldn't mean that it becomes a closed shop and noone else can get involved - with BCD it makes it easier to post a lot in a shorter space of time, than if everything had to be NO-related... Is it bad because it's different or bad because it's bad? I ignore anything about films, formula 1, a lot of politics stuff, but I am interested in what people are listening to, silly threads (that are clearly labelled) when I've got time to spare and above all NO when I have something to say, which right now is obviously not that often...

I'm really not bothered about post counts, but I don't think people should be censured for posting on BCD just because some people don't find the posts amusing or relevant... I've deliberately tried to avoid lots of posting recently because I don't want to be lumped in with the 'Pariahs'... I'd like to get to know people, be a part of this, but because I'm relatively new, I don't want to step on anyone who's been here longer's toes...

Three interesting points:

You meet NOOL mates by turning up to gigs and certain other events. There's usually fair warning and everyone knows where, when and sometime has access to phone numbers in case they get lost.

90% of the time it SHOULD BE easy to ignore things that are of no interest to you, but recently it has not been. Any thread that may interest you is normally on page 2, having been pushed there by all the identical threads that don't interest you at all.

Even threads that are of interest or entertainment lose their sheen after the sixtieth one in the same day.

It's nice to hear someone say that they don't want to step on anyone's toes - most new people on here seem to want to step on them as hard as they can.

Maybe Shug's critisism in starting this thread should not be taken as an insult, but a reminder that there are others on here who feel pushed out by the dominance of a few.

It's pissing me off as much as anyone else, as Shug knows very well. I don't want to get involved in a slanging match, just want everyone to post with a little more consideration.
