Gotta love them. I don't think they get the recognition they really deserve. In the 60's musical hierarchy, it's usually Beatles and Stones. But The Who are a little more derving of the Stones place. After all they did give us Live At Leeds, My Generation, Quadrophenia and Who's Next.
My Generation. Apparently, this is the performance that resulted in Keith losing his hearing in one ear.
Saw them on the greatest hits tour in 2000... Quality 
Definitely prefer them to the Stones...

not quite-that I think was on The Smothers Brothers Show in 1969 (?) tho Townsend later said a comtributing factor was hearing the LOUD wails that Daltry would let loose on stage.

Anyway, thats not the point. The Who (or rather, Daltry, Peadoshend and some session musicians) are a bunch of has been pensioners still out there refusing to accept that everything has moved on. And for some reason, promoters are still willing to throw vast amounts of money at them for this. And people will still go and see them. Same with the Rolling Stones. At least people like Ray Davies and Lou Reed have moved on to some extent.

I couldn't give a toss about whether they're stuck in the past or not. All I care about is the music. Good tunes are good tunes. That's why people still go and see them.
Those "good songs" are more stale than last months tesco extra value bread.
Take my advice, go and see Death Cab for Cutie or Richard Ashcroft, who are on at the same time as The Who. At least they dont embarrass themselves.
And as for the Smiths, well. Such a stupid comment isnt even worthy of a proper response.

Since when do songs have a lifeline of when it's OK to listen to them? If that's the case, people should be writing off stuff like I Won't Share You as an 80's relic not worthy of attention, because the whole 'gladioli and quiff' image is gone, rendering the songs worthless.

Now Christopher, if you going to try and argue Morrissey with me, at least actually listen to the songs, and see him live, at least once. Because, until you do, you really dont have a leg to stand on.

But the songs havent dated! You could release most of Strangeways tomorrow and it would still be as fresh as anything around. Wont get Fooled again might as well have been around since the dawn of time it sounds that old and outdated. Ditto the Kids are Alright. Ditto Substitute, Ditto Pinball Wizard, Ditto My Generation and so forth. These songs havent stood the test of time. And everyone knows this. Which is why Daltrey and Townshend, despite what they say, have no no decent new material. They are unable to move on.
I've seen Morrissey live, love the Smiths and have 3 of his solo albums.
I still prefer the 2 Who songs to any of his solo stuff.
to me the who are the greatest band of their era, better than the stones and the beatles, entwistle was my bass Idol! i saw them in 97 or 98? on the quadrophenia thing they did, it was great

and "Who's Next" will always be in my personal top 15 of killer records.

"A Quick One While He's Away", as performed on the Rolling Stones' aborted "Rock and Roll Circus" special...the absolute most exciting single-sing rock performance ever captured on film (and the Stones knew it, thus delaying the release of the film by several decades) 
They're my favorite rock band, no questions asked (the Beatles are in a league of their own, they belong to no genre). The constant "reunion" touring does wear down the legacy, but from roughly 1966 to 1972 you couldn't beat them when it came to singles or live performances. Take away the songs that "CSI" has hijacked and you've still got some great, great songs.
The Who were brilliant. My teenage girls even like listening to them and I think that's the sign of a great band, when they can attract the interest of another generation.

My favorites too. Live at Leeds captured a band that just rocked every other band on the planet off the stage.
And Who's Next-- a masterpiece. Unlike most, I don't really care for Baba O'Riley or Won't Get Fooled Again, but Bargain, My Wife, Love Ain't For Keeping, and Behind Blue Eyes-- my favorite-- make it one of the best albums ever.
