Heard this on the radio three times now, and out of sixty entries, it was selected as the best one.

Sounds like a typical weak anthemic type Embrace song; no footie chant stuff in it.

Anyone else heard it?

I quote the lead singer:

"I didn't want to get into the offside rule or Bobby Charlton. I wanted to write something that was a bit more universal, "If you didn't know about football you could take it as more general, it could be about a loved one or a relationship or whatever."

How can you label a bloody football anthem with that pish?! Surely the idea of the England World Cup song is that it is about football

Embrace have got steadily worse since their first album... It'll take a while before anyone manages to write something as good as WIM as a footie song again... Anyways, only anthem you need right now is I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles...

I thought the chorus sounded just like For You by Electronic.

Why does everyone seem to have it in for Embrace? Is is, as I suspect, simply because they're successful?

No. People have had it for Embrace for years, its just the thing to do. Its mainly because they had a storming 1st album, and they totally threw it away by mkaing a few albums of turgid soft rock.

Out of Nothing was quite good though. Ashes is a quality tune. Not heard the new album. have to wait until they play V again for me to see them. Or some other festival.

I saw em in Mandela Hall about 5 years ago. They were a replacement for Wheatus would you believe. How times change.

In fairness, the last few years they have sold a truckload of records. And they have sold out a few big venues recently.

I always had Embrace down as a sort of "standard issue Indie rock band" as in there's just nothing charismatic or special about them. I obviously missed this first album because I've found that most of their stuff just wafts in one ear and straight out of the other  Never leaves any sort of imprint.

The overall band image they have doesn't help either with the clichéd and Verve-like Indie rock uniform I.e. shoulder length hair, 4 day stubble, leather jacket, 80s sunglasses, denim etc.

They also regularly add classical strings to their soft rock anthems don't they? You can tell when the strings come in and they appear on Top Of The Pops with a bloomin' orchestra behind them, it's time for the CDs to be punted down the second hand shop! Pretentious shite.

No its cos their recent output has been IMHO shite. I did like them back in about 1998 though.

Coldplay are very much in the Burt Reynolds dustbin too.

Their first single and few EPs were part of the soundtrack of my first term or so at uni... Saw them at Radio 1 Sound City (or whatever it was called) in 97 and they were good live... There are one or two decent songs on the next 2 albums, but by that time everyone and his dog were doing the same thing... Fireworks EP is class, though...
