Very famous hardcore punk producer. Produced PJ Harvey, Nirvana (untill Kurt wanted a remix), The Pixes and countless others.

fronted very noisy band called big black. guitars and drums like jackhammers. good but not really my thing anymore.

And one of my favourite albums by one of my favourite bands - Seamonsters by The Wedding Present... I mean, let's face it, Hannett could be a bit of a twat, but he was still a great producer - if Albini wants to air his opinion, fine... At least he has a half-decent track record...

Seems a bit back-handed in terms of NO "producing dance music but still being good" (what exactly are they know for, again? )

But hell, it's a short life and would be a dull one if everyone agreed with everyone else. I can see why some folks who got into JD might not be as fond of NO, I know it took me a while to warm up to the more dance-music style of the mid-Eighties stuff (still not a big fan of remixes), so to each their own

And never having really heard any of Albini's stuff, I dunno whether he's a mouthy wanker or not. I reserve that judgment for folks who have :D

i am one of the people who believe that new order makes great music. In spite of most of it being dance able. Thats all right, mimicry is the highest form of flattry ehh new york music scene. hey with all that it sells.

Rapeman were awesome. Albini + the rhythm section of Scratch Acid making an ugly, cantankerous racket.

also, Albini had a side project with Nash Kato (Urge Overkill frontman) called Run Nigger Run. They wrote a track endearingly titled "Pray I Don't Kill You Faggot" hahaha

Albini on Depeche Mode, from an interview from the early 90s:

"I've turned down big money just because I didn't think the people would be very fun to work with. I was asked to do a Depeche Mode album a couple of years ago. I have no idea why, but they asked me. At the time I had never even heard them so I went to go see them at this big sports arena in London. After about two songs I thought that "this is horrible, these guys are the worst. What are these young homosexuals doing?" So I just split. And told them that they had the wrong guy.

Bollocks! Albini obviously couldn't see even half of the humour in some of Morrissey's lyrics. It's too easy for people to go "Oh The Smiths are so wrist slashingly depressing" but in my opinion those people a) haven't properly listened to the music and b) are probably jumping on the anti-Morrissey bandwagon because they see other people so readily doing it.

I've googled Albini earlier and I wasn't very impressed with what I read. He comes across in interview like some hyper-opinionated wanker and has been in a couple of bands with hilariously bad names.

I'm not a huge Albini supporter myself--but you're missing the point. Albini insults every band, anyone is fair game. Its just great to see him get on a tear and point out the glaringly obvious, you know, that the Smiths are miserablists. etc. etc. (I love miserable music myself, so, whatever)...

whats funny is that I saw Shellac last year and Steve Wynn opened for them; ironic given that Albini slagged off Wynn's old band the Dream Syndicate about 20 years before in his 'zine column, calling 'em "butt wipers".

I think he's basically saying "I don't like sequenced and/or dance music" which is fair enough but I had to read it twice to get that. Both Nirvana and the Pixies were overrated to the fcuking hilt anyway whereas New Order are simply a great band, "dance music" songs and all.

Isn't he mentioning that NO is not the normal dance music? The type that is the same sequence of beats a thousand times over (kind of like the sound of my head banging against the wall ) He's saying that the music is MORE than dance music?
If so I completely agree with him. I'm not a "club music" type of guy, but I love NO because they are NO, if they sounded like normal dance music I would have passed on them years ago. Plus Bernanrd's innocent voice makes the band, which is what I think he was trying to say.
