Conversely... I'd gladly pay for a product that was properly written and tested like....Gentoo Linux. In fact I did donate to both Gentoo and Mandrake (now madriva), don't see what I owe macroshaft at al...other then a bill for medical costs brought on my win-induced stress.

Not exactly, true. I mean for YOUR purposes Linux would be great, you do some coding and some web devel....both things linux pisses on windows at. EDIT: what ARE the killer apps you cannot find for el-pingu then?

I mean yes, I have a windows machine, I use it to play racing games (the only credible one for linux is "racer" tho GPL will run under WINE). But I do a lot of other stuff with my computers and the Linux one handles all else.

Mandriva comes with some 4000 pckages.

My Gentoo...lemme see..... about 90,000 applications and games on demand merely by typing "emerge $APPNAME".

I'll grant you there may be no easy alternative to some particular killer app or other, but that's getting rarer these days. I COULD do all my music in Linux if I wanted, but I will NOT use anything but cubase, I freak out on windows and mac if sat down in front of Logic or Sonar.

And it's much more simple to steal software on PC, it can be found very easily at any torrent near you ;)

BACK whem linux had issues with a K6 chip? My god, that's ancient history, and I seem to recall all the pro audio mags screaming "do not buy these for audio work" as far as windows goes too.

I'd also point out that the founder of gentoo is a senior code monkey for MS, works all day on DOS ,then comes home and works on Linux, he describes it as being like getting into a nice warm bath.

There's a reason Linux (and other 'nixen) run the internet, and why the US military have banned all MS products.

yeah well even a hardcore penguinista like me can't blame MS for that...it's their choice to charge for their software, just as it is the OSS lot's not to.

their prices are insane tho, and their product simply does not perform anything like as advertised, and before you can use it, you have to agree to STFU and accept that as a fact of life with no come back.

It's stuff like that that makes it fun, to own a copy of XP, but to leave it in the box, and run a cracked on instead LOL....really. (it was an OEM bundle with something or other I was building for someone, I did not set out to buy it)
