70,000 and a new record for a testimonial, and an estimated 30,000 Celtic fans create a new record for the biggest travelling support in Britain. Roy Keane's worth it.
We got there about 3 and there were already thousands at the ground, both Celtic and Utd fans. Glorious day and luckily we had a carry out :D Decided to head into town where our usual on these occasions, The piccadilly Tavern, was fecking shut!
Met up with a suited and booted Liam who had just been to an interview for Social Services I think he said, had a quick natter about the up and coming gigs and he was off. We headed back to the ground wher we couldnae find any souvenir programmes cos they'd sold out and it was only 6 o clock ![]()
DoN and his missus met up with us shortly after and we headed into the ground for a pre-match swally....Budweiser
Fcukin detest the stuff, but luckily the several cans beforehand masked the taste of this vile stuff.
We were seated in the South Stand near the tunnel where the players come out, and the atmosphere was electric, twas amazing to be looking over at the North Stand where the Celtic masses had taken it over, not only that, but there were a good 3 or 4 thousand in the away enclosure to our right and sporadic hoops tops amongst the Man Utd fans.
The teams performed a Guard of Honour for the man himself and 70,000 voices rang out with "There's only one Keano" The teams were both near enough full strength, with only Nakamura and Balde missing from Celtic and Ruud and Rooney missing for Utd. The game itself was entertaining enough with Man Utd having a few more chances in the first half. Myself and John kept taunting Mr & Mrs DoN that they were close but nothing to worry about.....and vice versa. Keane played the first half for Celtic and the second for Utd.
The second half saw Ronaldo score a clearly offside goal, much to The Corby Order's disgust. Although later on we did hear from our Cousin Stubbsy that Ronaldo's goal that was given offside was clearly on. Celtic had a few chances to score with Dublin heading off Van Der Saar and onto the bar. Personally I thought the atmosphere at the Ryan Giggs testimonial was a lot better, but no doubt the drinking all day by the celtic fans had clearly worn them out :D We got a few words from Keane himself after the game thanking us for our support and that the day would live with him for the rest of his life.
A great day out nonetheless, not one sign of trouble or Republican chanting, and the good news is that the £2.5 million raised is all going to Charity. I am slightly hungover, but I have the game on video downstairs so I will be putting that straight to DVD.
I hope Mr & Mrs DoN are enjoying being at work today ![]()
THERE'S ONLY ONE KEANO.
