.....why are both bands so fecking HUGE in Eastern Europe? I mentioned my year as a factory worker in Czechoslovakia in an earlier in post and it put me in mind of this fact. Everybody I met out there was a massive fan of one or other of the two gloom-merchants to the exclusion of almost any other band. The bands names were daubed on walls everywhere you went and there appeared to be a football style rivalry between both sets of miserabilists.

The best bit of graffitt I saw said

FUCK DEPECHE MODE

which had been scored out by someone else and underneath it written

NO, FUCK THE CURE!

The bird's big sister (Russian) has a DM tatoo on her back and when I was back out in the Czech Republic a few months ago the local disco was still banging out a playlist which was 50% DM and The Cure so it's not like much has changed in more recent years.

So why is it that all these keraaazy Slavs cannae get enough of shite British goth-rock? It's gotta have something to do with the bleak post-communist landscape no? Or am I intellectualising too much here?!

Not so sure this line makes much sense or maybe I'm wrong but you just happened to meet the fans of the said bands and that's about it. I think it has nothing to do with the Eastern Europe countries. Are you trying to say that there are no DM and Cure fans in GlasVegas land? I pretty much doubt it.

I of course can speak for my country only and to be honest, it's always better to know that there are people who like DM music rather than some folk shite - all turkish and greek covers :nuts: :barf:

And on this site I've noticed that lots of Americans enjoy their music too. So maybe it's like that everywhere but not in the UK, dunno :dunno:

I remember being in a bar in Krakow once and all that was played was either Depeche Mode or The Cure. And I know for sure that i'm sharing a lift with a couple of Czechs for the Depeche Mode gig in Dublin next month.

Can't comment on the Cure but Depeche Mode actually work their socks off for recognition, don't they, and tour these places to death. New Order, as far as I'm aware, have never played behind the (old) Iron Curtain, have they?

When we did Client in February in (the former East) Germany EVERYONE was a fcuking Goth. Have never seen anything like it. Goth City.

Ummm. Did you read the post? I didn't write "went to Czechoslovakia and met a few Cure and Depeche Mode fans". I think I made the point quite clearly that ALMOST EVERYONE I met under the age of 30 was into one or other (rarely both) of the bands in a BIG way. And i was there for a year, so I met a whole bunch of people.

You also just need to look at the type of venues DM play in these countries, all massive stadiums. Could they fill a stadium in the UK? I don't think so.

I'm convinced it's got something to do with the bleak industrial backdrop of a lot of these former Soviet countries. The music suits it. I know there's a lot of lovely big cities in the Eastern Bloc but there's a lot of really depressing places too. Smog filled hell holes destroyed by heavy industry.

Maybe it's just inherent. I'm Ukranian-American and I still like both bands - and New Order. Maybe it's the post-communist backdrop, maybe it goes well with the literature - Chekhov, Dostoevsky, and Gogol come to mind. But either way, they've got better taste in music than most American youth. Would you rather be around a bunch of gloomy Depeche and Cure fans or around some American kids who think 50 cent and the Pussy Cat Dolls are "the shit"? I'd take the former anyday.

Also, Depeche Mode has played in Moscow and other Russian cities, I believe. The Cure - according to the interview on the Trilogy discs - never played in Russia, although they were thinking about its setting to do their Trilogy concert, but they chose Germany instead for its familiarity.

i work with a hungarian guy and he was going on about depeche mode and how he had seen them and they are going to budapest twice this year etc, so i asked him if he liked New Order.

Sister Shed has a point. If I meet someone that likes DM then I always know they like the same groups. . .the only difference is the order they like them in. The bands always are: the Cure NO DM The Smiths/Morissey Radiohead REM (old stuff)

I too have found it interesting that alot from this site (non-Americans) don't have this same grouping.

And Brits always have good taste? You may have given us New Order (and Depeche Mode, the Cure, and PSB), but you do realize that you have to live down that your nation exported the Spice Girls, Ozzy Osbourne, and George Michael.

Or what about that Crazy Frog? That's so awful you can't even let that lose on our country, where Britney Spears and Jessican Simpson are considered "singers."
