Prolly a dumb question 20 years later but is the name "Pet Shop Boy" a reference or sly joke to something?
What is a Pet Shop Boy anyway?

This is such a stupid question, but I heard that Neil and Chris had a friend who worked at a pet shop, hence the name. Also, I've heard that they thought the name sounded vaguely hip-hop ish, as well.

They must be very accomodating lads, you'd surely just have to start off with a gerbil?!
What next: a Coypu?! ![]()
i only came in here to see if anyone had made hamster up bum gags. Well done JT and Al.
Tho I may add that there's apparently a lot to be said for wrapping a hamster tightly in gaffer tape so it gets some fun too.

Rude
. Just answer the question.
I also think that name-calling is rude too. Besides, I was just speaking my mind.

You'd be right in thinking that, but there's no need to say that it was a stupid question. What if someone genuinely didn't know?![]()
They were on Radio 2 last night.

pet shop boys = gathering of like minded male on male sex people on certain LONDON commons. sorry to say its spread to the north now ![]()
I thought it's a common knowledge. I picked up the name in the early 80s because they found it cool that it sounded like a hip-hop crew.

No, it's got nothing to do with cruising for men in London. The word for that is, er, cruising. Whether it be London, Mancland, New York, wherever.
As has been alluded to here it's allegedly to do with a practice which involves, in the main, small rodents such as gerbils. Or hamsters. Which can be bought in pet shops.
Apparently these small rodents borrow even deeper if they get sniff of a rat somewhere behind them too. Ouch.
But again, have no idea if this is just all Urban Myth or whatever.

"Clear up the hamster stories.
The hamster story is... I personally don't believe anyone's ever put a hamster up their bum. Chris and I had some friends who worked in a pet shop in Ealing and they used to be referred to as the pet shop boys and we used to say that they should start a group 'cause it sounds like a rap group. There were B Box Boys and the Peech Boys and the Beastie Boys were just coming up then. Do you know anyone who's ever done that? Have you ever met anyone in your own life who's done that?
No, but I lead a very sheltered life.
I'd be very surprised. You've got to laugh anyway, if that's what people think we get up to. We're animal lovers, we wouldn't do anything like that. You thought it was Chris did you?"

Apropos... The Pet Shop Boys were at a local radio station yesterday. They said they were homosexual, but not gay... Can anyone explain that to a non-english. I always thought that was the same thing. Are the gays perhaps those that are acting and dressing like a woman?

Gay and homosexual, are essentially the same to some extent, but some people may have different connotations they get out of those expressions. In other words, some may prefer one expression over another, as to how they define themselves. They may have used the term "homosexual" on that occasion.
Bere wrote: They said they were homosexual, but not gay... Can anyone explain that to a non-english.
What it means is that 'gay' can also be construed as being 'happy' and the Pet Shops Boys are, when all is said and done, actually just miserable cnuts.
QED: they're miserable homosexuals, not gay ones.
Have you ever seen the fcukers smile?!

They were so happy in the Se A Vida E video. By the way, I still don't consider them homosexual or gay. Maybe Neil Tennant is a little bit, but Chris Lowe is not.

Well thanks so far... Neil said: "We're homosexual but not gay...", that's where I don't get the difference... (They are not together btw. ;) )
In Germany you can't say: "Ich bin homosexuell aber nicht schwul.", thats completely the same... ![]()

Bet you paid a mint for that! Mind you,the tickets I got off E-Bay for Liverpool.Ended up paying £140 for two tickets. At least they're five rows from the front!
The word gay lives thru another mutation in America. Now it doesn't necessary mean homosexual, but also may mean weird or stupid in verbal exclamations.

Actually, that remark kind of reminds me of something I read in an interview with the actor and director of Hedwig and the Angry Inch. He seemed to mean that he was a homosexual but he wasn't going to be flamboyant about it and shout it from the rooftops. I kind of see the same with the Pet Shop Boys. They may be gay but they're not a gat act, like the Indigo Girls, for example.

Below is a link to a Pet Shop Boys interview on a Swedish Music blog, where I thought they were talking about how they chose their name. However, I just read it again and they don't actually talk about that at all. ![]()
Still, I think it's quite an interesting read to anyone who likes the band. Bernard Sumner also gets a mention near the end, although I don't think their comment is relevant anymore. Mind, this interview was originally published in 2004, before WFTSC.
Apparently Stephen Hague is not too fond of their use of orchestra hits. Not a big fan of trademark sounds, is he?
