Prolly a dumb question 20 years later but is the name "Pet Shop Boy" a reference or sly joke to something?

This is such a stupid question, but I heard that Neil and Chris had a friend who worked at a pet shop, hence the name. Also, I've heard that they thought the name sounded vaguely hip-hop ish, as well.

They must be very accomodating lads, you'd surely just have to start off with a gerbil?!

What next: a Coypu?!

i only came in here to see if anyone had made hamster up bum gags. Well done JT and Al.

Tho I may add that there's apparently a lot to be said for wrapping a hamster tightly in gaffer tape so it gets some fun too.

You'd be right in thinking that, but there's no need to say that it was a stupid question. What if someone genuinely didn't know?:thumb:

I thought it's a common knowledge. I picked up the name in the early 80s because they found it cool that it sounded like a hip-hop crew.

No, it's got nothing to do with cruising for men in London. The word for that is, er, cruising. Whether it be London, Mancland, New York, wherever.

As has been alluded to here it's allegedly to do with a practice which involves, in the main, small rodents such as gerbils. Or hamsters. Which can be bought in pet shops.

Apparently these small rodents borrow even deeper if they get sniff of a rat somewhere behind them too. Ouch.

But again, have no idea if this is just all Urban Myth or whatever.

"Clear up the hamster stories.

The hamster story is... I personally don't believe anyone's ever put a hamster up their bum. Chris and I had some friends who worked in a pet shop in Ealing and they used to be referred to as the pet shop boys and we used to say that they should start a group 'cause it sounds like a rap group. There were B Box Boys and the Peech Boys and the Beastie Boys were just coming up then. Do you know anyone who's ever done that? Have you ever met anyone in your own life who's done that?

No, but I lead a very sheltered life.

I'd be very surprised. You've got to laugh anyway, if that's what people think we get up to. We're animal lovers, we wouldn't do anything like that. You thought it was Chris did you?"

Apropos... The Pet Shop Boys were at a local radio station yesterday. They said they were homosexual, but not gay... Can anyone explain that to a non-english. I always thought that was the same thing. Are the gays perhaps those that are acting and dressing like a woman?

Gay and homosexual, are essentially the same to some extent, but some people may have different connotations they get out of those expressions. In other words, some may prefer one expression over another, as to how they define themselves. They may have used the term "homosexual" on that occasion.

What it means is that 'gay' can also be construed as being 'happy' and the Pet Shops Boys are, when all is said and done, actually just miserable cnuts.

QED: they're miserable homosexuals, not gay ones.

Have you ever seen the fcukers smile?!
