Flaming Pu Pu Tray (not sure I want to try that)

* Indicates food is spicy. Please avoid fiery red peppers. (oops, I've been eating those red peppers for years, they aren't THAT hot)

* KUNG PAO CHICKEN -- Dead chicken sauteed with peanuts in hot red pepper sauce. (thank fuck for that, eating a live chicken might not be the healthiest thing one could do)

Not listed on the menu though, are the free cigarette ashes from the cooks while they're preparing the food. Bon appetit.

No joking, but I'm sure we once passed a restaurant on the outskirts of Congleton somewhere called LI YU FOOK !

I think this is very tame compared to what other people eat around the world. I'm Japanese, but I don't like seafood or fish (or beef or pork for that matter). But, one of my grandmother's favourite dishes is a warm carrot salad that has cooked fish eggs (I don't know what kind) in it. My mum is a huge fan of raw sea urchin....

One of my favourites ever was something that sounded like 'Cow Pat Pie'... Restaurant translations are class... Always the high spot of holidays abroad, reading the appetising translations...

I once worked in environmental health - all those hideous restaurant stories and piccies put me off - well for all of two weeks. I just never want to think about whats going on behind the scenes in those kitchens!!

I've never worked in environmental health but I've worked in a couple of restaurants. I just try not to worry about what goes on in the back. What you don't know won't hurt you.

i'd go to chinese buffets more often but I don't get my 8 bucks worth most of the time..

I tend to go to the Far East, Liverpool L1 9DF. not the buffet. that's shite. alacarte's the best.

This is the old man of Liverpool's Chinatown and along with the Yang Sing in Manchester (now closed because of a serious kitchen fire), it must be given the credit for taking the lead in raising the standards of Chinese restaurants in the North West. When it first opened in the mid 1980s, it was the only serious alternative to Yang Sing for proper Dim Sum.

(although the Yang sing in Manny is way overrated in my opinion?

I think chinese food is better in the US than in England anyway..

but I really like this chinese buffet in Liverpool by the train station.. I plan on visiting next month. haha

I agree - me and Lorraine have been there a few times - once with a couple of friends for Lorri's birthday - and the service was REALLY REALLY SLOW. The food was okay but the portions were small. Terrible value to be honest with you. And the wine / drinks is extortionate.... We now go to some of the other eating houses in the area instead and have decided to give YangSing a wide berth in future cos it IS overrated. I find thats often the case with any restaurants that get bigged up by the press - theyre always going to be a crushing disapointment.

When I was in Liverpool the other day (weeks ago) I went with my Grandad, Aunt and Cousin to this Chinese Buffet Resteraunt called "Buffet Star" in the centre of L'pool. They had some strange foods such as Dep-fried crab sticks, which when you took the batter off where no different in the centre.

Those beffets are awesome. The lunch buffet only cost 6 quid and you could eat as much as you want.

Yep, at probably the busiest Chinese joint in Salem today, three (3) of the cooks were puffing away while cutting stuff up. Don't think it'd matter if all the restaurants were non-smoking front of the house, I'd bet good dollars that the staff back of the house would still be

And at another Chinese joint, a month ago, one that had an unbearably small delivery passage, I knocked over a bus tub full of cut celery, and most of it fell to the floor. The cook just picked it up and said "No problem, I'll just wash it all over again." Oooohkay, if you say so.
