But let's employ a bit of common sense here, if I wandered around with a Scotland shirt down here or had Scotland flags plastered all over my car/house then sooner or later I would get grief or one of my windows smashed. Even if the World Cup was on or not, even if we qualified or not
Are you sure? I think that’s bollocks. The English, as a rule, do not have anti-Scottish feelings at all.
I would fancy my chances wearing a Scottish shirt in any English City more than the other way around.
Sadly, the reason for these attacks is the inability of some people to tell the difference between banter and reality. Intelligent people I know might joke about throwing stones at people in England shirts or pulling off people's flags. Hating the English is a national obsession up here. But when there’s the possibility that it will be taken too far, it takes on a more serious aspect.
It's similar to England in the 70s/80s when it was common and socially acceptable to pick on and abuse Indian, Pakistani and black people. People cringe at it now, but the accepted name for the corner shop was ‘the Paki Shop’. Serious education was required to put a stop to it, and that’s what’s required in Scotland now. Knowing the Scots, these attacks might be all it takes – they’re very good at making their collective minds up about something and getting on with it. Look how they tackled the behaviour of the Tartan Army a few years ago. (Although, admittedly, this was largely a (successful) attempt to make the English fans look bad!)
The first step is understanding that you can be proud of something without hating everything else.
And BA's right - if the Scots stopped going on about the English going on about 1966 it would probably never be mentioned again
