I don't think we ever thought he was funny over here...we just liked what he did for kids...
Surrendered far to easily when under attack in WW2,dropping Britain in the shit, and strengthening Hitler's weapons arsenal...but for a magnificent minority of resistance fighters who gutted it out..

it seems that the British forget too easily what was the invasion of Belgium and the success our four armies (Dutch, Belgian, yours and ours) had against the nazis. Maybe you are ashamed by the way the BEC left in Dunkirk, but thousands of French soldiers died to let it do. And when some of them arrived on the beaches of Dunkirk, they were gently said by the British : "Be Gentlemen, stay in your country, give us all your boats, carry on fighting against the Nazis until all of us are safe by us. Good luck Froggies." So, as British, you may think that the French have surrendered far to easily, but did you ever think of what they though of the British Army behavior ?
Ok, ok... that is history...
And we both know the lack of vocabulary we would suffer if one of our countries was not to exist. French leave - filer à l'anglaise French letter - capote anglaise...

I keep walking into these war debates of late.. But yes,I'm well aware that Dunkirk was a massive and wise retreat, and a battle lost, but in no way a surrender by the British..The defence of Paris was just pathetic from the French, who's soldiers were popping home on their bicycles for lunch, in the face of the Blitzkrieg! Its the leaders you have to blame for such a swift surrender, defininitly dropped their allies in the shit...Anyway, all water under the bridge.
The cunning way they turned defeat into victory after ww2, immediately taking advantage of germany's humbled state to form a mutually advantageous alliance (aka the EU) molded entirely in France's interest (cf the CAP) and leaving the UK screwed whatever it did.
Actually I half admire them for this, I don't think one can condemn them simply for playing the game much better than our hopeless incompetants do.
Also the way they tried to re-establish their empire post ww2 instead of quitting with good grace.

And dragged us into Vietnam to do it. ![]()

It was Chruchill's idea. He told de Gaulle to do so in order to avoid another disaster. And Churchill himself did not want to get into this... On the other hand, de Gaulle did not wish UK to get into the what was to become the UE as long as UK behave as the 51st state of the USA...

The USA and the UK were already busy in Korea. So they left France the question of Indochina. The American policy was very tricky. On one hand, they helped the French by supplying them weapons, on the other they took contact with the ones who were to become the leaders of South Vietnam and surrounding countries (Laos, Cambodge...) in order to take the place... from old-fashioned colonialism to economical imperialism...
LOL, the EU thing is funny, cos I seen a book on Demonoid the other day all about how the EU is actually....you'll really love this...a JOINT plot between the Nazi's and Stalin designed to build Europe in their image.
Some people, need to have their head's examined LOL.

French People. now don't misunderstand. There has been a steady flow of French folks through Bangor in the last 15 years or so and have gotten to know many of them. I would say tat about 1 in 10 was an unbelievable tosser, 2 out of 10 were really "miserable french stereotypes". The other 7 out of 10 in addition to being pretty damned sound, would all answer the same when asked why they left france...."the french". LOL
I'm baffled myself, everyone was dead nice to us there, but there you have it, the French hate the French.
