Ok I have tons of "Classic Rock" and "dad music" that I adore. I was listening to a cover of "Stay With Me" by Def Leppard 
that was pretty good....but I know I know NOTHING about The Faces...
so, where do I start??

Well, there's two bands-- Faces, followed by Small Faces...
followed by Faces. I guess that's three bands, but it's all the same band...
Don't think I've ever heard anything by the Small Faces, I've heard the occasional Faces song here and there on classic radio (usually to fulfil their quota of "one Rod Stewart song an hour"), and "Oh La La" is on the Rushmore soundtrack 
I've always assumed "Stay with Me" was a Rod tune solo, didn't know it was a Faces song

The Faces are the DOGS BOLLOCKS. Why people think the Small Faces were better, I have no idea! Though I do like the SF. This was Rod's defining years (1969-76) just about everything since has been shite.
I have everything The Faces did. Start off with A Nod's As Good As A Wink. A fcuking cracking album from start to finish, with a couple of Lane/Wood songs on it and the album most fans regard as the best, raw and rocky, even with a Chuck Berry cover thrown in (Memphis)
Then if you like that, get Ooh La La, Long Player & First Step (in that order)
It took me years to find Ooh La La, First Step & Long Player and I think I picked up A Nods... in America when I was over with DoN in 2003.
In the last year or two I have finally got my hands on some of Ronnie Lane's solo work - and that's fucking brilliant as well. But I'll let you check The Faces out first.

They were also good mates with John Peel back in the day (in fact, you can check out Peely "playing" mandolin during the TOTP appearance of Rod's "Maggie May", which also features a lot of The Faces)! :)
Just to clear things up.
There were only two bands. The Small Faces & The Faces. Steve Marriott fcuked off to join / start Humble Pie, so endeth The Small Faces....Kenney Jones, Ian MacLagan and Ronnie Lane were then joined by Ron Wood then shortly after by Rod Stewart who had been going to the soundchecks cos he was best pals with Woody - thus name changed to The Faces.
Rod had been playing in The Jeff Beck Group along with Woody beforehand. And you'll also hear him on "In A Broken Dream" by Python Lee Jackson, Rod owed money to one of the group and got cajoled into doing the vocals for which he never received a penny in Royalties, which still grates him to this day.
Rod had already signed a solo Record deal before joining The Faces, Maggie May went mega just as The Faces were kicking off properly, but it was a Rod solo song song not a Faces song (even though some of The Faces played on the track) and as Nick King says, Peel was a massive fan / friend of the band. I have a cracking bootleg from this period when the band played a few times on Radio 1.
Stay With Me is a bonefide Faces song as is Ooh La La (which is sung by Ron Wood) After Maggie May - The Faces were constantly referred to as Rod Stewart & The Faces stateside which led to ego's being overblown and led to the start of the end, afterall it was Ronnie Lane's band not Rods.
